Hey IG!
I’m “technically” fairly new here . . . I signed up some months ago, dropped my premium account and now I’m back watching lessons and (hopefully) getting better!
I’ve only been at this guitar thing for a few months now – since May, so I’m still very new and very mediocre. I’m already very impressed (if not overwhelmed) by the depth and breadth of the information here at IG at look forward to making the best of it.
For a bit about me: I’m a 28 year old life-long lover of music and all things creative. My mom taught me to play the clarinet when I was 8 and I dabbled with a few more woodwinds and the trumpet for a while, but nothing serious. I’ve been fascinated by the guitar and it’s amazing capabilities for as long as I can remember but never got around to picking one up.
Back in January, I met an amazing guy (now my boyfriend) who gave me one of his axes at the mere mention of wanting to learn how to play. I’m doing my best to show appreciation & respect of the gift, instrument and the music by learning to play the best I can. I look forward to earning mad skills with the help, knowledge, support and camaraderie that look to be in high volume here. I had a guitar teacher for a month (about 4 lessons) . He started off giving me a good foundation in basic theory, open chords, major & pentatonic scales shapes. I’m doing my best to build on that, trying out the tabs of songs that I like, figuring some simple things by ear & doing exercises for technical prowess.
As styles & players go, I’m very much a mixed bag. I adore John Mayer, Santana, Buddy Guy, Flea, Frusciante, Frank Zappa, Steve Morse, Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Paul Gilbert and even some Ottmar Liebert & Didula tho I’ll try to play anything that sounds interesting.
Some of the current artists on “Learn to Play” list: Daft Punk, Jason Mraz, Usher, David Bowie, India Arie, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers…and there you have it!

Hi there!
Great to have you here. It certainly sounds like you’ve got a great foundation from which to develop on the guitar! I love all the artists you’ve mentioned. Particularly India Arie – I think Complicated Melody is one of the most stunning songs I’ve ever heard. Definitely one to learn to play! I think a singer/songwriter lesson in her or John Mayer’s style and a Red Hot Chilli Peppers style lesson would be really interesting to do. I just learnt ‘Why Georgia’ from John Mayer’s ‘Room for Squares’ album- maybe I’ll do one in that style!
I hope you get lots out of this site! It’s certainly a great place with lots of great and friendly people and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time here!
If you have any questions or requests feel free to ask away!
Have a great time and good luck with your guitar!! š
All the best,
Tom
Wow Tom, and here I was thinking that India Arie would probably be the last recognizable name on the list. I love the singer/songwriter style. It’s probably my main influence for wanting to learn. Lessons in that style would be awesome! Complicated Melody is a nice song . . . I really like her song The Truth & John Mayer’s Gravity.
Thanks for the warm welcome & I’m diggin your taste in music already . . . going to check out your lessons right now!
Ha! My lessons aren’t in that style so far but I’m certainly going to be diversifying in the coming months. My primary style is fusion and jazz but I love everything and have a huge love of singer songwriters such as India Arie, Ed Harcourt, Imogen Heap and Rufus Wainwright. Infact one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen was Rufus and his sister Martha a few years ago. I’d do anything to see India Arie live though.
I’ll try to do a singer/singwriter style lesson as soon as time permits! Thanks again,
Tom
Hey FutureStyle!
It’s great to have you here. As Tom said, you’ve got an absolutely excellent musical foundation to start learning guitar from. Some really great musical tastes there!
Really nice of your boyfriend to give you an axe. I remember many years ago, my sister’s boyfriend gave me an electric guitar that he never used. It was a bit beat up, but it definitely did the job in getting me inspired to play more. š
Again, great to have you here and I’ll see you around!
SeanThanks for the warm welcome Sean. Same here – I started with an old electric Arbor Ibanez knock off. Having an old beater really is good motivation to get the skills to justify a new shiny one.
And I’ll tell you what, I’m really curious to see how my wide music tastes will effect my playing as I progress…I tend to want to play a little bit of everything and it’ll be cool to see how it all comes together as the eventual “FutureStyle”
Hey FutureStyle (cool name ) welcome to IG :)you will find so many lessons here that will keep you busy for a longggggg time :Danyway hope you enjoy your stay š
Thnx Bill, you’re SO right. Between the videos and the forum there’s plenty to do here. Great community and cool instructors. I’m thinkin I’ll stick around for a bit. Oh, and thanks for the complement – I doubt that I’ll have much actual style for a while so it seemed fitting. Besides, I figure my future style will always trump my current style – or at least I hope so, LOL.
Hi Future Style! Great to have another chick here! Let’s rock on š
