    Ok, so its not as interesting as the topic might lead you to believe.

    I borrowed an old Mahavishnu Orchestra song book off a friend this week and found some interesting things inside. Namely some notes on the song ‘ Awakening ‘ which I found interesting, although not surprising.

    The top of the page has a little note;

    Ad Lib solos; based on *astrological sign of individual soloist.

    Then down the bottom theres a list which continues like so;

    *According to ancient Egyptian mythology, the corresponding keys (pedals) were assigned to the following astrological signs.

    Areis Db (me) , Cancer Ab , Libra D , Capricorn G , Taurus Eb , Leo Bb , Scorpio E , Aquarius A , Gemeni F# , Virgo C , Saggitarius F , Pisces B .

    So anyway, thats all the info they give us, and as you can imagine (if you don’t have the song that is) they take solos and each person has a different pedal tone to improvise with.

    The point of bringing this up, by the way, was just to see if people agree or disagree with the Egyptian choice of pedal vs astrological sign. In other words, do you feel most comfortable being labeled with one pedal tone or would you prefer to improvise over another?

    Personally I have always been partial to the key of Eb, and yes an Eb pedal isn’t the same as playing in the key of Eb, but still. I’m wishing I was Taurus right now šŸ™‚

    Well, I’m a Virgo, so I get C. My question is, how can an accident-prone individual like myself get stuck with the one key that has no accidentals? Doesn’t make sense, I tell ya.

    Indeed, Pythagoras and his treatise ‘The Harmony of the Spheres’ goes into depth with what the Egyptian Mystery schools knew about music and astrology.

    I am Fmajor, Sagittarius – I hate that key !

    I thought I might expand (bore you) on this subject a bit in case anyone was interested (who knows!)

    In ancient Chinese Cosmology Astrology ‘was’ the science of celestial sound. The 12 Tones which emanated from the One Word were considered to be the real cause of astrological influences over earthly events. The Egyptians developed similar theories and Pythagoras, who lived and studied in Egypt, believed there was a correct key to be used in conjunction with whatever Cosmic Tone was sounding upon the Earth at that time.

    Sounds silly, but there may be more truth to these concepts than meet the ear!

    True or not. It is clear that many if not all ancient cultures found some significance in the power of music, particularly singing. From the American Indian rain dance rituals to Islamic prayer song’s. This surely has had some long term effect on our unconscious affection to music, from an evolutionary standpoint, and its subtle powers to change the way we perceive the physical world.

    Sufi’s and ancient Egypt look at the whole Universe and everything in it as made up of vibrations. To go as far as to say that first there was the Primordial Vibration and a sea of like soupy elements, as Cymatics (study of vibration) shows, vibrations will create order out of chaos and eventually structures from this. The Egyptians called this principal Ma’at (later to be an actual Goddess). The Hindus call this Primordial Vibration OM, the Egyptians ‘The Divine Utterance’, the Abrahamic religions ‘the Word’.

    You can stop me when you’ve had enough of my babbling . . .

    Hmmm, judging from that, I would be a Bb.

    Which is kinda weird because I have always loved Tenor Sax playing, which is a Bb instrument, and I’m now forming a Jazz/funk band with a tenor sax player.

    But I HATE FLAT KEYS! hahaha

    (*crappy Italian Accent*) Well, whatever, I’m a Leo and you don’t mess with a Leo, got that? (*end crappy Italian Accent*) šŸ˜‰
