    Hi guys.

Recently I’ve been suffering from some excruciating lower back pain in the base of my spine. I’m currently teaching over 100 students a week and practicing regularly for a good few hours per day so I’m sat down with a guitar for most of the day 7 days a week. I’m also certain my posture is terrible and that this doesn’t bode well in the long term.

I just wondered if anybody has had any experience of the ‘Alexander Technique’ or other such damage prevention techniques or if anyone had any other advice or experience with this problem. It must be fairly common within the musician community. I’m planning on buying a specialist stool for correcting bad posture when playing but I wonder if there are other things I should be doing. It’s so difficult to think about posture when your playing or teaching!

    Thanks in advance guys! šŸ˜‰

    All the best,
    Tom

    Hey Tom,

I’ve actually had some similar experience with that. Not as much anymore, but when I taught at a local music store, I used to get pretty bad pain in my lower back. It got especially worse after a few hours of sitting. Come to think of it, I never really did much to help the problem. I should have though since I have a bad back to begin with.

Anyway, I’d imagine a special stool would help immensely. And it wouldn’t hurt to do daily floor back exercises. I’d really recommend doing some daily stretching of some sort.

    Hope it gets better!

Go get some physical therepy. One of the pillows that looks like a toilet seat would help also.

You probably compressed your tailbone. Very, very painful but also very treatable.

Thanks for the great advice guys. I’m going to see an osteopath in a few days although, curiously, it seems to be much better today…?
    Cheers!

Hi Tom ,Give these articles a good read though, there’s a load of infomation there .The articles are called Lower back Savers by a Strengh and Conditioning coach called Eric Cressey.I had a Chronic shoulder problem for about a year and reading his articles help me over come them.
Due to the fact you’re sitting down for such a long time I suspect you have a lot of tight muscles which over time need to be lenghthened by stretching.
    Give the articles a go…………………

Hey Tom, hate to revive the topic and I hope that you’ve sortedthis problem out, but if you haven’t, it might be a good idea to do some basic strength excercises that stimulate the erectors, the rhomboids and the lats.
I’d recommend Hyperextensions and Deadlifts (with correct form) for the erectors (the muscles in the lower back)
I recommend cable rows for the rhomboids and lats. These aren’t the only things you can do if you want to gain size, but I’m thinking of just strengthening your back at the minute.
I’m training 6 days a week with Weight training and Kung Fu and I haven’t had any bad pains in my lower back since. I did used to get a twitch or two a few years ago, but since I started training last year, it’s been great. You obviously will get a lactic acid build up from the training, but that goes and it isn’t the same pain as a bad lower back. I hope this stool you’ve had has worked wonders. šŸ™‚
