Dialing in Tone / Live Setup Tutorial

Forums Guitars, Gear, Software & Education Dialing in Tone / Live Setup Tutorial

  • Post

Hey guys, I’ve been thinking about doing something along the lines of this. I’d touch on various aspects of developing a tone that works for live, the basics of mic’ing an amp, pedals, midi controlling, multi fx, pickups, pedal boards, building a rig for touring..

I’m not sure when I will get around to doing this, but was wondering if there were any requests for similar topics to be covered!

Hey Steve, think you could give a few settings on that Nova delay?

    Hey Steve, šŸ™‚

Along those lines, perhaps you could help to demystify the differences and the typical uses/applications of: Fuzz, Distortion, Overdrive, Clean-Boost, etc. Furthermore, I think proper usage and setup of Compression can be a bit confusing for some people also! (Personally, I don’t use a Compressor live, but I’ve used them extensively while recording, and if I did a gig where I played a majority of clean-tones – like perhaps in a Funk or Dance/Top-40 Band for example! – then I would probably implement a compressor to my live-rig!) Furthermore, perhaps a suggested “order-of-effects-in-the-chain” could be covered. That can be confusing for beginners I would think. šŸ˜‰

Anyways, those might be related topics which people could benefit from a good explanation! šŸ˜Ž

Hey guys, this sounds like a great idea. A lesson on building a good pedal board would be interesting,
chain of effects. I just jumped off the true bypass band wagon, maybe explain some of that too, like buffers, fun stuff like that šŸ˜›

    Good idea Steve.

Where can an overdrive best be implemented? What effects can, or should be used in an effects loop? Why is it important to consider using effects with hard bypass? What is the proper way to use a compressor? How does one go about tuning his rig to a specific room? How to use two different amps as a stereo rig, or a wet/dry setup? Bill covered alot of this in his post. I find this stuff very interesting.
