I stumbled on an interesting data map on another forum. Kind of a funny research poll! It displays where in the U.S. people describe their soft drinks as “pop”, “soda”, or “coke”. I’d be curious to see how this type of thing reflects internationally too.

I myself have always called it soda. What do you guys call your “carbonated soft drinks”? šŸ˜€

As a kid we always called it Pop in the UK. I’ve not heard it called anything else over here(I mean over there) to be honest.

    Guys, šŸ™‚

When I was growing up (well…still working on that actually! – LOL!) in Massachuseets – USA, we used either the term tonic or soda. I noticed that “tonic” is NOT on the list, so maybe here in my locale, we’re a buch of anomaly/weirdos! (LOL!) Of the choices, the map correctly sites the Northeast of USA as using the term soda, I suppose. Never ever did we use the word “Pop,” unless we were referring (derogatorally) to the likes of Madonna, Milli Vanilli, or Vanilla Ice, etc. (LOL – Ha-Ha!!!) šŸ˜® :p šŸ˜Ž

    Interesting chart! šŸ˜‰

We call it by the brand name. Or am I missing the point? For example, we have Coke (Coco Cola), Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew, etc. so we call it by that particular brand name, and don’t use a generic word like soda or coke.

I guess this is how one brand name – Coke, overshadows the other soft drinks. SImilar to how we would refer to a photo copy as a Xerox (its actually a company name). šŸ˜€

Growing up in the north, we call it pop. Now i live in FL, and people call it soda, or soda-pop. I still call it POP! I might get weird look’s sometimes but it is what it is.

It has always been situational for me I guess. I.E. If I tell someone I’m going to the store to get a soda. Seems like too much effort and also too much detail to tell someone what I am going to get. Now if my friend is going to the store and he asks me if I want something to drink, then I’ll specify because it is then relevant enough for me to go into detail to tell him exactly what I want. If I said grab me a Coke. He would bring back a Coca Cola. I’m currently in the military and I’ve been all over. Same holds true no matter where I go it depends on the context and the importance of specifying exactly what you want as to what you call it. Never called it a pop before though
