So the new DT album is out. What does everyone think?

I gave it a spin earlier today. I do think it’s definitely an improvement from Systematic Chaos. I’ve only listened to SC a few times since it came out. But this new album definitely has more to grab onto.

I’ll have to give it a lot more play time to let it sink in though. On first listen, I feel like it has some really great stuff, but about half of the album just didn’t really click with me. I really enjoyed the first 3 songs, but the last 3 songs just didn’t do much for me. There are great moments in those songs, but as a whole I didn’t feel like they’re the greatest. I also REALLY didn’t like “The Shattered Fortress”, it was just a complete mash-up of all the other songs in Portnoy’s saga. Some originality would have been nice with that one.

Anyway, I’ll be listening to it more. Sometimes DT albums need some good time to sink in. I will say this though, it hasn’t been since “Six Degrees” in 2002 since I’ve been completely blown away on the first listen with a new DT album. I do miss their older stuff. All that said, it’s still great to have new material from them.

    sean,

I agree. I gave it a listen to, once so far, and was not at all impressed with the last 3 songs. The first 3 are really good though. But, it might just be that it’s one of those CDs you have to listen to a few times before it sinks in. I’m willing to try a few more time.

I’m still in the process of acquiring (illegally, to be honest :D) this album, but IMO its too early to make any judgements. It took me 10 years to appreciate their Awake album!

These guys work hard at their art and the last thing they need is immediate analysis. All critics who give judgement within a few days should be hanged. :p

Please, give it time… and lots of love.

    Cheers!

p.s. Damn! Jack Daniels is f****ing good!

Eh the heavy songs are alrightttt….Wish they would have a little more song structure so songs can be identified. I know its “progressive” but Octavarium had some structure and that’s my fav album for sure.
