heres the song to listen to… it wouldnt let me edit the post after 10 minutes
The first song, and the song I am still trying to play as best as it goes is: Enter Sandman from Metallica.
Definitely one of my favorites 🙂
i raelly love the scropion by megadeth. when the first solo happens and the rhythm guitar is playing such a cool riff in the backround. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkK5ItNYhUo
This metallica song beginning sounds alot like mercyful fates song into the coven… Into the coven was recorded a year before this metallica song came out…

fates song
Out of Nothing by Dark Tranquillity, love the guitar!
I always love the riffs Mikaek Akerfeldt(Opeth) comes up with. Anything from the red album(Still Life), as he calls it, would fall into my favourites though.
Train of Thought by DT – awesome riff!
I’m a huge sucker for the early Dream Theater, and such riffs as the one from A Fortune in Lies in the intro, I really like. All songs of that album has a lot of great riffs. Images and Words has a lot of nice riffs too.
Sure Dream Theater is not your typical metal riff band, and if you’re looking for more metal based songs, I’ll have to return to this thread once I get home to my CD collection.
I love the atmosphere and riffs in “Scullkrusher” by Overkill.
Also most riffs from Rust In Piece by Megadeth are cheesey. For example I love the 5/8 riff/solo in Five Magics. Simple, yet addictive. One of my favorite metal riff’s is pretty simple if your good with your right hand.Metallica’s ‘One’ right when it changes to the vicious double bass thrash then the solo comes in over it.Very nice and ofcourse there are many other’s but thats one for now.
Strapping Young Lad’s – Love?
Andromeda – Blink of an Eye (in the beginning)
Dream Theater – The Glass Prison (the riff in 5:53)
Spiral Architect – Insect (the end of it)
Opeth – Master’s Apprentices
Tool – Forty Six & 2 (especially the outro)
Bulb – Zyglrox (the riff from 0:17)
Meshuggah – Bleed (the riff is cool but it just repeats and repeats throughout the song..)
Psychotic Waltz – …And the Devil Criedthere must be many more I don’t remember now
Andromeda – Morphing into Nothing (the entire song is just so… energizing!)
ARK – Missing You (the riff around 5:50)
Dream Theater – Strange Dèja Vu (2:38 – the first time I started to realize what a monster Petrucci is)
In Flames – Trigger (the starting riff)
Richard Lundmark – Fret Dance (one of my all-time favourite metal instrumentals)
Extreme – He-Man Woman Hater (the starting riff after “Flight of the wounded bumble-bee”)And plenty of others.
Oh, and I’m a fan of the riffs in the Meshuggah obZen album.
Mine change every week! but at the moment:
Psycroptic- Alpha Breed
Cryptopsy- Back to the worms (that slow one about 30 secs in)
Cynic- How could I… (chorus riff)
Electric Wizard- Funeralopolis
Blotted Science- Synaptic Plasticity
Suffocation- Pierced from within (the first bit with the mental rhythms!)
Kailash- The sleepers
Decapitated- Revelation of existence (the first riff)i could go on…
At the moment:
Ozzy Osbourne – Miracle Man
