Hey Guys, š
As I had mentioned in an earlier thread (“Drooling Over Flaxwoods!”) the store where I teach (Performance Music Center – Woburn, MA – U.S.A.) is officially a Flaxwood dealer, and we got 6 new Flaxwoods in as our first shipment! Of the six instruments, there are four different models:
– (2) Liekki
– (2) Rautia
– (1) Laine
– (1) AijaI didn’t bother to play the two duplicate models (I played one of each instead, as I was pressed for time.) So here is my review:
Liekki – As I said of my opinion of the Liekki a few weeks back, I love this guitar! It just has such a perfect resonant balance/projection. I think Rick Graham said it wisely when he said that “it just sings, even when played acoustically.” That’s it right there folks! Exceptional clean, edgey, or with full-on sustain! I wasn’t sure that this guitar could handle high-gain settings because of noise or shrillness, but I was wrong! I found it quiet enough (noise-wise) and with a resonant “full-bodied midrange.” Killer! (Think…Bill Meehan needs to own one of these!) š
Rautia – The Hum-Hum pickup configuration; Excellent humbucker-tones. Think “Paul Reed Smith on STEROIDS!!!” I easily wrangled creamy Carlos Santana-type high-gain violin-like tones out of the Rautia. Plenty of low-mids to go around on this model! I also easily got some very convincing “edgey” slightly overdriven classic-rock (ya know like non-master volume Marshall JTM45 or Pete Townshend/Hiwatt tones.) Nice! I also rolled-off the volume and went into “neck-pickup blues” territory. Again, sweet stuff. š
Laine – The three (3) Duncan Lipstick-tube single-coil model (with that unique and “super-hip” neck-pickup blend-control!) Now personally, I’m not a “twangster/country” guy who lives and dies by his single coils – LOL! However, this guitar is AWESOME! The tonal pallette is stunning and out of all the Flaxwood models, this one clearly delivers the biggest number of different tones! Think of it like this: It’s a standard 3-pickup/5-pos. P.U.-selector BUT with an added neck pickup blend control. When you start blending that neck lipstick with any of the other positions, you get some wonderful “new” sounds! Very hip. (I believe there was an OLD Fender Nocaster design with a somewhat similar wiring/blending scheme? Not sure though?) I think some people (especially clean-tone and/or single-coil players) will go “cuckoo” over this guitar! (Think anywhere from John Jorgensen to Jack White!) š® š
Aija The two (2) EMG Humbucker model (81 & 85.) EMG’s are generallly NOT my thing, but for those who dig that EMG “honest in-your-faceness” and the Aija’a nu-metal vibe (Oh yeah! The finish is VERY industrial-looking with a sort of “matte/unfinished charcoal-gray” finnish finish (LOL!) you’ll LOVE IT! Very METAL!) (Think Zakk Wylde meets Kerry King!) Also, it’s quite a bit more affordable than some of the other models (This Aija sells for under $2000.!) So that’s cool right?!? (Most of the other models are approx. between $2400. – $2800.) š
So that’s it for now guys. I’ll let you know if/when PMC gets any more Flaxwoods in. In the meantime, have fun pickin’ & grinnin’!!!:D

Hey Rick, š
Consider it DONE!!! I just pasted my review in there and added a few up-front (Pros & Cons) comments. Because I literally “cut & pasted” the text in there, it got all “contiguously pasted,” so it’s a bit difficult to read. However, it’s there for anyone who’s interested!

Hey š
I just want to add some pictures of Flaxwoods that I made on the Musikmesse.
Maybe you can add these to your review Bill.I’m no photograph, but I think the pictures show the guitars good enough to get an impression.
The pictures are a bit shaky š®http://bildupload.sro.at/a/images/1-DSCF1247.JPG

Hello All! š
Well I thought you’d all like to know that we’ve now had a number of regular guitar customers come through Performance Music Center, and (not too surprisingly!) a lot of similar adjectives/descriptions keep popping up in regards to these Flaxwood guitars! For example, a regular customer (who’s a good player and very knowledgable regarding all things gear-related,) played one of the two (2) Liekki (P-90 equipped) models and mentioned the following: (remember, I had NOT talked to this guy at all before he gave me his opinion AND he definitely DID NOT read my review I posted here on Infinite Guitar, because after his description, I even asked him if he had read my review, and he had no idea what I was referring to! So this is scary consistent with MY assessment!!! (LOL!) I guess this means either we’re both spot-on, or neither one of us has a clue! – LOL!) š® š
This thing (Liekki) is GREAT! I can’t believe how even all the notes sound EVERYWHERE on the neck! The sustain on this is OFF THE CHARTS! I do this thing whereby I strike an open G-3 string and listen for the un-amplified sustain, and this guitar rang forever! I mean seriously, I could NOT believe how resonant and sustaining this guitar was BEFORE I plugged it in! I knew it would just sing when I plugged it in to a good amp. So I pluuged it into a couple of diiferent choice Fender tube-amps – [Tone Master half-stack & Tweed Deluxe combo & ] and man was I FLOORED! Overdriven, edgey, clean, that guitar does it ALL! I was very impressed with it’s responsiveness to volume-knob changes. It “cleaned-up” beautifully. Again, I know I already mentioned this, but I still can’t get over the evenness of the notes, the sustain, and the clarity of the notes even when very overdriven! Ya know, Joe (store owner/manager) was mentioning how a few customers had balked a bit at the price-point, but ya know what? The price is actually right in line when you consider what your getting?!? Really, I mean Paul Reed Smith, Gibson Les Paul Standard/Custom, right?!? I dunno, I think they’re (Flaxwood) priced VERY fairly!
So that was one of the coversations I had with a guy who tried out a Flaxwood.(BTW, that’s just one such assessment. I’ve talked to a couple of other guys who mentioned extremely similar things.) Did anyone notice the striking similarities in description with what I had to say?!? I just think that’s how obvious those features and strongpoints are on the Flaxwood line! š š
OK, That’s it for now. Any comments or questions are welcomed.
