Just a quick post to say Hi and Introduce myself!

Although I have played guitar in the past its been some 16 years since an injury which stopped me playing and while I have recently started again progress is slow and quite literally, painful.

Back then (as a child of the 80’s ) I listened to a lot of the really serious contemporary guitarists (Becker, Friedman, Lane, Vai, Petrucci etc etc) and had a fair amount of chops (didn’t we all? ;p ) but few opportunities to play with a band.

Took a few lessons with Shawn Baxter and Phil Hilborne (did a couple of courses at GIT) and while I had a “road map” for things to study to really improve (many thanks to Phil Hilborne – the man is a total legend) I never really got to grips with that regime before my accident and ended up selling all my gear shortly afterwards – being convinced I wouldn’t play again (I can’t use my fourth finger to any great extent).

Currently using a custom Carvin DC727 with a 20″ radius and a simple Fender amp + Zoom – not particularly a toneworthy rig but it suffices for now.

That’s it! I look forward to picking up some of the fantastic advice here and improving to the point where I don’t suck šŸ™‚

    Hey Dave,

Welcome man! I think it’s awesome how you’re starting up again after a 16-year hiatus. I can definitely relate with injured fingers, I have tendonitis that tends to creep up on me when I play a lot, and often have pain in my pinky. Not fun at all.

How are you liking that Carvin? That a 7-string model? Post some pics if you’ve got ’em! šŸ™‚

    Hey Sean.

Yeah, it’s a 7-string. I played a UV back in..oh, 1990 I guess and decided to pick up a Carvin as I’ve owned a couple in the (distant) past and they’re great value for money. The 20″ radius is quite unusual but feels great and lets me get a stress-free lower action without fret buzz or fretting out issues. It’s all mahogany with actives so the tone is quite awesome, if a little “wuffy” if I don’t EQ it properly.

Enough talk! Couple of pics, as requested:
