http://www.myspace.com/tomquayleHey Tom, š
I just want you to know that even though you probably made your “apology for non-shred” comment in jest, I’d hope that you never feel any sort of responsibility to a “notes-per-second!” standard?!? I know that you’re a tasteful and mature musician, and I personally love when talented musicians “blow chops” here and there as a matter of excitement, pacing, energy, etc. Perhaps you received some feedback from some fans who expressed opinion about a lack of “shredding” in your Guitar Idol 2009 entry (“Chasing A Beat.”) While I can understand fans of yours enjoying your smooth shredding style, I would also hope that they could appreciate “Chasing A Beat’s” strong melody, composition, pacing, as well as outstanding rhythm-playing, tone, etc. š
Here’s another way to look at it: back in the early 1960’s, when many of Jazz’s pioneers and young phenoms (like Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane for example) were still playing a very “dense and busy” style of melody and improvisation, the great visionary Miles Davis took a decidedly much more minimilistic approach centered on a focused voice, rich-tone, and extended improvisation over modal-vamps. By todays standards, Miles’ direction may seem like “no big deal.” However, back then, his career shifts and artistic direction were often called to question. I never remember hearing about Miles apologizing for his decisions to change his style, to play more economically, or to leave his past (swinging Bee-Bop standards) in the past! In fact, it seemed to me that Miles took pride in rebeling against Jazz’s status-quo!
I guess my (long-winded as usual) point is that you ARE an excellent musician Tom Quayle, and I respect your playing output whether you choose to be sparser and melodic or denser and “shreddy!” š
Then again…you were probably just joking around in a self-depracating way, in which case I appreciate your humility!!! š
I’ll shut-up now (LOL!) š®
