    Hello All! šŸ™‚

I’m very excited as I just found out last night that I have an opportunity to go see the amazing Guthrie Govan – Live and in Concert in Boston, (actually Cambridge) Massachusetts here in the U.S.A. on Friday January 29, 2010! You all have NO IDEA how PSYCHED I am to see one of my idols performing live and in-person!!! He’s also doing a free Masterclass at Berklee College of Music’s Performance Center the day before the show, so I might try to go to that too! šŸ˜‰

I’ll let you all know how the show was next week! šŸ˜Ž

As amazing as Guthrie is, and as much as I enjoy his Erotic Cakes album, I find his live stuff to be a bit boring after about 20mins. Maybe it’s because I just don’t enjoy his fusion jams very much. I saw him just before Xmas and among other tracks he did a Billy Cobham song with Dave Kilminster (who couldn’t seem to match Guthrie’s creativity live and kept playing over Guthrie instead of giving him space) and I was just wishing he’d get back to playing his own stuff. Dull, Dull, Dull. Technically and harmonically impressive, but just dull. I couldn’t count the number of people at this small gig visibly bored and waiting for something interesting for most of the gig. Didn’t help that the sound engineer did a poor job and Dave K was so much louder than everyone else.

Hopefully it will better for you.

I prefer when he does clinics/Q&As as he his an incredibly interesting teacher and can be very funny.

    Hi Mandz, šŸ™‚

Thanks for the “heads-up.” I’m actually NOT sure what the gig-format will be as far as whether he’ll have his usual UK-based Erotic Cakes band-lineup or not?!? I know that he has done some of these clinics at Berklee before, (He did one on behalf of Ed Yoon and Suhr guitars about 6-months ago, and from all first-hand accounts it was AWESOME!) He also sat-in with The Jon Finn Group (who is supposedly opening for Guthrie Friday Night, and they’re REALLY good too!) This might be his first Boston-area headlining fusion-gig, so I’m stoked! If he doesn’t sctually bring his band over here with him, then I’m expecting him to use Jon Finn’s Band (Jon Finn is a “local-legend” of sorts who is a Berklee Professor and a LONGTIME Boston-area performing artist who specializes in “shred-delivered-prog-rock-instrumentals!”) Jon Finn is a class-act and a helluva instructor (I never actually took lessons from him – nor did I ever attend Berklee for that matter!) but from those who have, he’s supposedly an OUTSTANDING guy/teacher! šŸ˜Ž

I’m seriously doubting that Guthrie will deliver a fusion-dullfest on Friday! After all, People flock to Berklee College of Music from all over the world every year to earn their degrees from one of the worlds premier jazz-based institutions! Also, I’ve been to MANY shows over the years (many of them instrumental-fusion-type shows too! – like: Steve Smith’s Vital Information, Chick Corea’s Electric Band, Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Steve Morse Band, Steve Morse’s The Dregs, Scott Henderson’s Tribal Tech, Mike Stern, etc. and trust me on this – Boston’s proximity to Berklee College, The New England Conservatory of Music, Boston’s own Jazz legacy as well as the relative proximity to the jazz-legends of New York City – ALL adds up to a VERY healthy dose of respect for the average Boston Concert-goer by these serious artists! I’ve read many quotes over the years from some of these legends (and others) who are not lost on the fact that we generally have a healthy contingent of “excellence-thirsting/rabid/demanding” FANS here in the Boston-area!!! šŸ˜‰

Here’s a quick story for ya: About (11) eleven years-ago, My girlfriend (at-the-time) and I went to see Radiohead here in Boston at the Pavilion on their OK Computer Tour. (BTW, I thought at the time, that the show was a MASTERPIECE!) Anyways, we walked out of there “floating” as it was one of those “Special” shows that just “takes you somewhere,” if that makes any sense? So I spent the better part of the next week-or-two raving about that Radiohead show to anyone who would listen (and I’m sure a few who didn’t want to listen to me too! – LOL :o) Then about a month later I picked-up Rolling Stone Magazine (something I DO NOT regularly do because I think there’s a bunch of self-important CRAP in there too often!) because I noticed that there was a cover story about Radiohead! So when I opened up to the Radiohead article/interview, the interviewer opens-up the story with the following (forgive a bit of paraphrase – I’m jogging my memory from 11-years ago!!!):“I caught up to Radiohead in Philadelphia on their Tour-Bus where they’re passing around a spliff (joint), and absolutely beaming over what they all described as one of their best shows ever up in Boston.” Well, you can imagine how PSYCHED I was to read that! It basically confirmed what my instincts told me was true!!! šŸ˜‰ This is just one of many examples of how bands and/or individual instrumentalists will “kick-it-up-a-notch” when passing through certain cities/towns, and Boston IS one of those towns IMO! šŸ˜‰

I WILL give you my honest assessment next week though! šŸ˜Ž

if you take a Videocamera with you ….(i wish i had….)

I’m pretty sure anybody who enjoys fusion will love every second of his playing. Like you say, it’s mainly jazzers who’ll be going along so it’s unlikely that there’ll be anybody there who doesn’t love the stuff. And GG being awesome at (practically) every guitar style will blow everybody away and his great sense of humour will endear him to everybody. I think I’m in the minority of shred-heads in not enjoying fusion for more than a few minutes.

I’ve seen him live so many times and sometimes I’ve been completely mesmerized, and other times just bored.

I’ve absolutely no doubt you’ll enjoy it all.

    Hello All! šŸ™‚

Forgive me for the Carly Simon song-reference there! (especially to you younger folks who never heard the tune before, or those who have heard it and hate it – LOL!:o)

Anyways, I’m about to go teach for a few hours before heading in to (The Middle East Club – Cambridge, Massachusetts – U.S.A.) to see the Guthrie Govan performance that has me SO FIRED-UP! (thus the initial body/purpose of this thread! ;))

    Can’t wait!!! šŸ˜‰

BTW, I have since found out (as I had expected anyways!) that Guthrie DID NOT bring his Erotic Cakes Bandmembers with him on this trip to the U.S., and instead he is using Boston, Massachusetts’ own (and Berklee College of Music faculty member) Jon Finn’s Group! Although I would’ve LOVED to have seen Guthrie playing live with his brother Seth and the drummer, (whose name is escaping me now, but he’s excellent too!) I’ve seen The Jon Finn Group in the past with various personnel and they’re ALWAYS smoking-good! BTW, Jon Finn is an OUTSTANDING guitarist in his own right (and a helluva nice guy and from all accounts from people I know, a GREAT teacher too!) so I’m NOT worried about any sub-par accompaniment! I just hope that they’ve learned at least a handful of Guthrie’s original tunes, since I’ve grown to really like them ALL! (I’ve seen Guthrie play with Jon Finn’s Group before on YouTube-video and they were playing “Wonderful Slippery Thing,” so there’s at least one song they definitely know (Incidently, if anyone checks out YouTube footage of Guthrie playing “Wonderful Slippery Thing” with the Jon Finn Group, you’ll notice on the left side of the stage (facing the stage) a young (21-year-old) female-guitarist kicking-ass alongside Guthrie! Her name is Nili Brosh. She recently graduated from Berklee College, and she’s a very nice/humble person – and pretty cute too! She happens to be the younger sister of my friend and teacher Ethan Brosh – a MONSTER 80’s-style shredder in his own right! The Brosh’s are one talented family, come to think of it! šŸ˜Ž ) Check them out if you have a chance and let me know what you think of them both!!! šŸ˜Ž

I’ll let y’all know what I thought of the show later this weekend! šŸ˜‰

    Hello All!

Well, it has taken me a while to reply to my own thread and give you all a review of the show I saw of Guthrie Govan playing at The Middle East Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts – U.S.A. – just outside of Boston, MA.)

The show started with an opening act called “Tappin'” Don Lappin (aptly named BTW!) He was a bit too one-dimensional for my tastes (Tapping, Tapping, and more Tapping!)

Then The Jon Finn Group came out and played some of their original instrumental material, and it was excellent! The only negatives I could relay about Jon the whole night is that once in a great while, his exuberance gets the best of him and he proceeds to get a bit “spazzy?” and ahead of himself? Besides that, his tone was very effective at times, but when he was on his distorted lead-tone, and in the lower-register in particular, his neck-humbucker tone got a bit “fuzzy-buzzy/farty” if that makes any sense? Other than those “nitpicky things,” Jon Fin was EXCELLENT! He displayed impressive chops, but also he showed a keen sense of melody and feel in general. šŸ˜Ž

Once Jon finally brought Guthrie out to join the Jon Finn Group, they immediately proceeded to fire off a bunch of Guthrie’s Erotic Cakes LP material! (I remember hearing: Fives, Waves, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Sevens, Rhode Island Shred, etc.) It was GREAT! Jon Finn’s Group did an OUTSTANDING job of not only learning Guthrie’s songs, but also playing them with the requisite conviction and groove necessary to do them justice! In fact, if I didn’t know ahead of time, I would’ve been hard pressed to know that this was NOT Guthrie’s regular full-time band. They were THAT GOOD!

BTW, one of the things that struck me throughout the night about Guthrie, is just how CLEAN he chooses to play! (I mean that on various levels too. Like of course being as awesome as he is, he plays cleanly in his articulation. His hands are ALWAYS in synch, and his sense of time is IMPECCABLE!) But I also mean clean as in NOT MUCH DISTORTION in his tone! He chooses to play with a strikingly bright (perhaps a wee bit too bright for my taste, but not annoyingly bright!) and edgy tone, but unlike most shredders, he DOES NOT opt for that “creamy-sustaining” amount of overdrive/distortion. In fact, in an attempt to prove what my ears were telling me during the show, I went up to the stage right after they finished to check out Guthrie’s rig, and as my ears had figured, he was using NO OVERDRIVE/DISTORTION pedal (just a Robotron auto-wah and a Cornford Roadhouse amp-switcher.) Guthrie is CONSTANTLY playing with his guitar’s volume-knob! Anyone who has studied Guthrie’s playing preferences and knows anything about the Guthrie Govan Signature Suhr guitar, knows that his penchant for volume-knob dynamics explains the inclusion of the “blower-switch” on his signature-guitar (The “blower” is a wire-bypass straight from the bridge-humbucker directly to the output jack at full-volume, regardless of the volume-knobs level or the pickup-selection at the time of the switch-engagement! This allows Guthrie to go from say, a clean funk-sound with volume at 30% on the neck&middle pickup-selection, and then rip right into an amp-overdriven solo at full-throttle with the flick of one switch/button! This feature essentially takes a single-channel tube-amp and turns it into a two-channel amp – sort of!) So the bottom line: Guthrie’s straight-ahead guitar rig would probably scare the crap out of mere mortals who rely on lots of creamy-distortion/sustain and a bunch of effects, but in his hands, his rig allows him to put the pedal-to-the-floor and yet ALWAYS remain clear and articulate. AWESOME! šŸ˜‰

For me, the highlight came about 3/4 of the way through the set, when Guthrie introduced their next song (I don’t remember the song’s name – sorry!) as one that he (Guthrie) did NOT KNOW, and therefore, he would have to sight-read the chart they had on-stage. (Jon Finn chimed-in before he started the song with a plea to his many Berklee students in attendance: “Now you know why I’m such a ballbuster about the importance of being able to sight-read all you students out there!”) Now, I’m not gonna say that Guthrie proceeded to sight-read some crazy melody/head at a cooking-tempo, because he did NOT! In fact, Guthrie didn’t play the head at all! Instead, Jon Finn played the head (after a brilliant unaccompanied clean/jazzy intro – just beautiful and impressive!) The song was a jazzy-ballad of sorts, and I must say that although the slower-tempo made reading the chord-chart easier, the chord-changes themselves were NO PICNIC! There were some difficult chords to navigate in that chart, and Guthrie’s eyes were GLUED to the chart! After a couple of cycles around, it seemed that Guthrie was starting to memorize the changes a bit, which I suppose is a bit typical after a couple of passes through. What I was about to witness next absolutely raised the hair on my arms and sent a chill down my spine!!! Jon Finn signaled to Guthrie to take a solo, and Guthrie proceeded to tear the roof off The Middle East Club! What made this solo SO IMPRESSIVE, was a combination of melodicism, variety of ideas, dynamics, groove, articulation, flat-out-SPEED, etc. However, the thing that absolutely BLEW-MY-MIND above all else, was the fact that Guthrie LITERALLY made EVERY CHORD CHANGE in his solo!!! Again, remember what I said about the chord-changes…They were NOT your garden-variety I-vi-ii-V!!! He was implying the ALL of the chord changes BRILLIANTLY while “tearing-apart” every square-inch of his (borrowed I think?) Natural brown-stain finished Suhr guitar fretboard! In fact, if I had to sum it up with one of my typically annoying metaphors, it was like “Larry Carlton’s Brain/Ears-meets-Shawn Lane’s-Chops!” Good God almighty! I was floored!!! šŸ˜® šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜€

AT the very end of the night, they all got together and did the requisite “G3-approved” jam while trading-solos. This fell a bit flat for me, and after Guthrie’s set, it seemed a bit anti-climatic. That said, it was fun I suppose, and many in the crowd seemed to dig it. I wasn’t so thrilled about the jam personally.

All-in-all I had a great time! Guthrie was AMAZING, and Jon Finn was excellent too. Kudos to The Jon Finn Group for doing an OUTSTANDING job of acompanying Guthrie! šŸ˜Ž

    Sounds really great, Bill!

Unfortunately I havent seen Guthrie play with a band , but I recently went to a Suhr Clinic and it was an amazing experience, to say the least.
