I love this version, I heard it a few years ago before erotic cakes was released.
His tone is much different here, definitely more ‘metaly’. Some of those lines really remind of Richie Kotzen’s earlier stuff. 2:23 for example
Thanks for posting dude, been a while since I heard this š
Hey Ben, š
You are correct about Guthrie’s tone (“Metal-ey”) from back then (damn, that was 16 years ago! Time flies…) One thing I noticed (which I’ve never been a big fan of) was the extensive use of the flanger effect on distorted lead sounds! Yuck! š® (That was the only thing about Jake E. Lee that bummed me out too – though I think that sound works for rhythm sometimes – Think “Bark At The Moon!” I digress…) Anyways, all that said (about the “flanger!”) it’s so cool to see how highly developed Guthrie was even back then in seemingly all aspects of his craft! Wow, I wish I had heard of him back then! I definitely would’ve been a fan, just as I was of Vai, Malmsteen, Gilbert, etc back then! Oh well, the bright side is that Guthrie has given me so much to look forward to and discover over the last two years (since I found out about him.) Thank you YouTube!!! š
Hey Ben, I mentioned how I was (and still am!) a fan of Steve Vai’s, and you made a great point about hearing some Ritchie Kotzen influence at (2:23). Well, listen to (2:35 – 3:02) and tell me that couldn’t have been an excerpt from either “Flexable/Leftovers” or “Passion And Warfare!” (LOL!) That said, in no way do I think Guthrie is a “Vai-clone.” Guthrie is WAY too well-rounded/diverse to be considered a clone of anything or anybody! BTW, I generally despise music/art-related superlatives, (like “best-this” or “worst-that”) but in Guthrie’s case, I never feel stupid calling him “The Best!” He inspires me (and depresses me all at the same time – LOL!) š® š
Oh and thank you Rick for sharing this clip, as I love to hear the evolution of a great player’s style/craft! š
