<-- I don't actually look like that most of the time. It's from Halloween. My wife dressed me as an 80s rocker. The hair is real. m/ But yeah…I’m a metal head. I’ve been playing guitar for about a year. Spent about six months self taught and then found a guy in a local metal band to instruct me once a week. Since then my skill has been on a steady upward curve, making playing a lot more fun. I practice about 2-3 hours a night. I’ve also started to become exposed a much broader range of music (classical, fusion, old surfer rock, etc). Self teaching is still a big part of my process. I switched to Infinite Guitar from Guitar Tricks for a couple of reasons. For one, the emphasis here is on more modern styles and techniques. The instructors skew a bit younger and more in the direction of the kind of music that moves me. There also seems to be a stronger set of technical exercises here. I’ve already incorporated alternate picking exercises and the arpeggios etude into my regular practice. You guys also just have this attitude or feel that appeals to me. You seem to treat your audience as intelligent and your instructors seem excited about what they have to teach. Hope that’s useful feedback. I found the site through an announcement that Martin Miller joined the team. I watched some of his videos and thought “I want to play like that, how did he learn and how does he teach.” I thought about contacting him for some lessons on Skype or just to chat about practice techniques and process, but then I watched a bunch more videos on here and signed up. Figured the sheer amount of stuff on here was worth it. I’m 32 years old so I’m starting guitar very late. But you know T Model Ford didn’t start playing until he was 52 so I figure I’ve got an edge. I know plenty of guys who could shred when they were teens and now they don’t play at all. Those guys are idiots. I wish I had discovered the guitar earlier. By day I make video games! Full time job so I’m trying to do all this as a hobby. My favorite bands (currently) are Augury, Obscura, Protest the Hero, Animals as Leaders, Blotted Science, Atheist, Kalisia (the French prog band), and The Faceless. Lately I’ve been listening to Nili Brosh’s solo album and Prashant Aswani’s new solo album. I don’t have any illusions about being able to play like them any time soon, but I like to have badass heros. šŸ˜Ž I’m currently learning to play a bunch of songs off an old Six Feet Under album “Haunted.” Simple groovy death metal.

    Hey man,

Awesome stuff, glad you landed here at IG! We always appreciate the feedback as well, thanks a lot. And let us know if you ever need anything.

So you create video games as a full-time job? That is way cool. So do you work on certain technical aspects of the games or do you create entire games on a smaller scale? Cool job man!

    See you around,
    Sean

I’ve been in the game industry for about 13 years now. I work at Valve Software. I do a lot of work on Team Fortress, but have also worked on Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, and recently some stuff with Portal 2.

I’m a programmer and game designer. So I design weapons and implement them. Or create various parts of gameplay. That kind of stuff.

Interesting read – thanks for the feedback. With your practice regiment in mind, I have a lesson I could teach to work on pure right-hand picking speed. Might have to do it up, sometime soon. Very cool interest in music, I dig a lot of those bands too. Also awesome that you’re a programmer. I’ve gamed 1st person shooters since I was 6 years old… and am pretty friggin’ good at it, I must say! I pray daily for a new version of counter strike…..

Great feedback. You’ve got an interesting background! Really glad to have you here at IG.

welcome onboard man! Wish to visit Seattle sometime, home of all the great music (and great movies) I listened to in my teens.
And of course, I’d had to pay a visit to Lee’s tomb as well

You are correct. These guys tend to have great attitudes in general, and they all seem to be helpful!

Again, I agree, and you are correct, Martin Miller is awesome!

I joined when I was 42, (2.5 years ago) and I love it! BTW, I’ve been playing for 28 years (professionally for about 20-years) and I love the fact that I still KNOW that I suck, and thus have a ridiculous amount to learn and get better at – LOL!

By day I make video games! Full time job so I’m trying to do all this as a hobby.

I was a Computer Engineer until I was 29, so i know the feeling! Fortunately, I am now a full-time teacher and gigging musician.

    Best of luck!!!

Welcome man! Valve software! F*7#! I’m still tripping on Half-Life 2! I’m not a gamer but HL and HL2 are the only games I’ve seriously played.

Related to Guitar playing… its simple, don’t make any plans, any schedules, etc… just play Guitar everyday. šŸ˜‰

    Hey man,

that’s awesome I was able to draw you here šŸ™‚ I’ve been a Valve gamer since I was 12 or something, so that’s a good basis we have here šŸ˜€

Any stuff you’d be specifically interested in for future lessons?
