Hello all. I am excited to have found this site, and looks exactly like what my step son and I need to learn to play guitar. We both have no idea how to play, and I mean ….no idea how to play. So I’m looking for help on where to start here. What lessons to start with, and such. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome on board man! Being a beginner is a good thing actually! You get exponentially better with each new day/practise session, it’s great fun and very motivating! Also, having the open/uncolored mind of a beginner also means that you are often more open to unrestricted experimentation and fresh songwriting.
As for the playing part, I’d recommend you go to Lesson Categories/ Lessons by Skill Level /Beginner Guitar Lessons, and you’ll find tons of lessons to browse through.

A suggestion would be to make up a daily practice schedule that consists of both coordination and technique exercises (to get your fingers in motion) and also some lessons on chords and strumming. After you start to feel comfortable switching between various chords and fingerings, begin to take a gander at other lessons such as scales and other stuff. I can’t stress enough however the importance of trying to create and write your own musical ideas as soon as possible! Even if you just make tiny variations on existing songs you learn it is still this ability to “learn–> Adapt–>Change –>Create” that will keep you interested and inspired to play and practice!

Say your schedule allows for 2 hours of guitar playing /day, I would divide those half/half. First 3×20 min of various coordination and technical exercises, and then 2x3o min of song-learning. Also remember, it is always better to practice intensely for 1 hour/day than a marathon of 7 hours on a weekend, constant and regular repetition is the key!

Welcome to IG Kris! Some excellent advice from Richard there. Also be sure to browse the beginner lesson plan: https://www.infiniteguitar.com/guitar-lesson-plans.php

So what kind of music are you and your son into? What kind of guitar(s) or gear do you guys have at the moment?

Great to have you here. See you around,
    Sean

Hey guys. Thanks for the advice. I found the lesson plans that you suggested. I am off and running. I do have one more question. I have heard when starting out to play, you should start on an acoustic. Is that any better of a way or does it really matter? Thanks again fellas. Happy New Year to everyone out there.

Hey there, nice to have you on board!

The “you should start out on acoustic”-thing is a cliché that doesn’t seem to go away for some reason, but it’s really wrong IMO. To me that’s like saying: “You want to drive a car? Learn how to ride a bike!” – if you wanna play electric it makes more sense to start out on an electric. That doesn’t mean it isn’t helpful to play some acoustic guitar additionally to that.

Anyways, this weekend I might upload a tutorial that is geared a little more towards beginners, maybe you’ll find it useful 🙂

    Greets,
    Martin.

Welcome… You’ve found the right place!
