    hi people,

i am sumit from india. i am pretty basic at skills, been trying to workout on alternate picking for sometime. and then plan to do some bends and legato excercises. like many i so much dig playing more than the concepts. i know that stuff like scales are great when improvising but out of the limited time i find i would rather be learning a great tune or excercising my fingers to play cleaner and faster than to read stuff. hi again and see you in the forums.

    bye.

Hi from the French Alps. Its real cold here. I have a question for Sean Conklin about that marvellous pedal point legato study (Exercise One) he posted. Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t get why or how the pull-offs work. I can just about play the etude following Guitar Pro at about 90 bpm. I understand the hammer-ons,but the pull-offs ? If I play the passage with regular straight A notes in the bass it sounds sort of dull, but I don’t figure out the use of the pull-offs.

    Hey Stringless,

Glad you like the Pedal Tone tutorial! šŸ™‚

This can be a little tricky to get down. I’m assuming the main thing you’re struggling with is the 5th note in the sequence? First of all, make sure the first time you hammer-on with your ring finger (2nd note in sequence) that you KEEP your ringer finger placed on the 5th fret. So once you’ve hammered on, just keep it there. Then when you get to the pull-off note, pull your ring finger off the string until the open A string sounds. And when you pull off, make sure your ring finger catches/stops on the D string so you don’t accidentally hit other strings when you pull off. Also make sure the volume of your pull-off note is equal in volume to your picked notes.

If you still struggle with it, feel free to post a short video of you playing it and I can try to pinpoint what you need to work on.

Thanks a lot – so the initial pull-off gives a kind of appoggiatura effect ?
