OK guys, thought I’d share this little clip.
Its me improvising over a looped backing which is a drone in A.
I wanted to play something I wouldn’t usually play and this is how it turned out:http://www.rick-graham.co.uk/laneloop.mp3
It was all about the feel for me on this one.
Let me know what you guys think.Rick

Saw and heard this a while back on Petrucciforum.com, if I recall correctly? Very good job, none the less. Whenever I get my ass together and get my equipment set up again, I’ll see to recording something myself – don’t expect anything good, nor anything in tomorrow or maybe not even in this week. None the less: good work as always, Rick š
Thanks for checking it out! š
Yeah, it was made by Willjay who frequents the JP forum. Cool chap.
It’d be great to her you take a shot at it man šI’ve got quite heavily into Shawn Lane over the past year and Rick that’s a really great take!
I think you have really captured the vibe on this.
Inspiring stuff as always!
As Usual Rick you play amazingly!! that my friend was beautifully played and with so much feeling, You do some slide guitar with this?really liking the tone too:)
Hey Trev, thanks a lot man! It was the vibe I wanted to capture on this so its cool you [*hippie mode engaged] felt the vibe man [*hippie mode disengaged] š
Thanks Bill for the kind words! The first half of it is slide guitar, which I’m in love with at the moment. It’s such an expressive way of playing for me.
I’ll upload the backing here later for you guys to have a go at š
Very cool Rick. I hadn’t even finnished listening before the guitar was on my lap trying to transcribe one of those creepy lines.
The passage from 1:35 – 2:05 honestly has me begging for a cadence! At times I even thought there was a resolution or that one was comming. Thats just the nature of the lines though. Great use of tension.
Was this a spur of the moment thing at a gig or something? it sounds like your on stage.
Hey Mike, Glad you like it man!
No this wasn’t live, it was an improv I made over a backing taken from a Shawn Lane gig in 2001.
I’m really into doing one take improvs and in particular just letting anything and everything come out and this is what came out on this one.OK guys, here’s the backing for you to have a pop at.

give it a shot and post your takes here.
Damn. I might be putting myself into quite some embarrasment here, but I’ll go for it anyways. I didn’t really feel like shredding the fretboard apart on this one, so it’s very “easy listening”, I guess. Maybe not at some points. Just improvisation, anyway..
No further excuses. Now, here you go:

EDIT: I wasn’t quite aware of the track ending, as I was kinda…not really thinking about it in the moments of drifting away into the beauty of the backing. š

Hey Cael I really like that!! it has a nice feel too it:) what did you use to record ? 1:20 is real nice and I like the fact that you used a clean tone throughout, maybe take the delay off a bit as parts are hard to distinguish with the backing track but overall a good improv š
Yeah. I just used my boss Schecter C7 through Boss GT6 to cubase.
I did realize that about the delay – it’s a part of the setting on the pedal board, and not something added in Cubase. I could have taken it off a bit from the pedal board, but I didn’t really notice it that much untill after recording it, so I decided to just stick with it. š
Thanks, by the way!
Hey Nice take man! I agree with Bill it had a very nice feel to it, lovely mellow sound.
Nice work!
C’mon guys lets hear your takes š
Loved the slide on this. Some of the scales would sound not unlike a guy called Davey Graham who is in his 70’s now and is responsible for what Jimmy Page did in stuff like Misty Mountain Hop…he lifted it from Bert Jansch (is that spelt right???) who lifted it from Davey! We’re talking Moroccan scales in 1961! The British thought he was mad and left him well alone but he was the first person to bring scales from different parts of the world into folk music.
Loved this…great, great tone and very emotive playing.
