I was just browsing Youtube when I found this little gem!

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WHIb3WGUrAQ

This is the first time I’ve ever came across him and I’m very impressed indeed. I’m told he works with alot of R&B / Hip Hop artists. Apparently he’s never once bothered to study any theory whatsoever! Crazy
    Enjoy.

I hope you are being sarcastic, he won’t shut up about the importance of theory!

He’s a great player, fantastic phrasing!

That guys owns! Total natural. You can tell he really has a feeling for rhythm pockets and great groove playing. Thanks for sharing that Ben.

    Hey Ben, 🙂

Wow! Thanks for that link! I just stayed up ALL NIGHT checking out dozens of other clips with that cat (Jerus Moisee) and I was moved. Interesting to note that I used to hold my pick EXACTLY how he does (between thumb and index’s fingerprint – as opposed to the typical “shred” grip I’ve been developing over the last year or so, which is to hold the pick between the thumb and the SIDE of the index finger!) The biggest difference (IMO) is that the “shred” grip produces a forward pick-angle with less extraneous thumb & index motion, while the “fingerprint” grip allows more “pick dynamics” and may be better for rhythm playing in general. George Benson & Neal Schon are two noted players who grip this way. Also, Paul Gilbert explains in some of his instructional vids how he use to grip like J-Mo – thumb & fingerprint – and angle it backwards, but Gilbert claims he switched because his thumb hurt when he played a lot – which for him must have meant chronic pain! (lol!) I guess the bottom line is what feels right and LOTS of repetition and application are the keys to advancement, right?!? 😉

    I like how Sean C. put it: “He owns!” 😮 😮 😎

    Oh YES!!!

Now this is how I wish I could play guitar. This was my absolute goal for years and during my jazz degree until I realised my right hand was never going to be that good. I love the sophistication and amazing ‘in the pocket’ groove this guy has, coupled with a gorgeous harmonic knowledge and ability. He just seems so natural.

Another guy to check out is Jesse Van Ruller. He has the same Jazz based pick grip but is more firmly in the jazz genre. I’m so inspired by guys like this. This was all I ever used to play! Just wish I had the time to practice some more now!

    Fantastic player!!!
To echo what Tom said, this guy is just so natural at what he does and he is clearly really ‘feeling’ what he does too. Gotta check out some more vids. Thanks a lot for the link Ben!

Truly a gem! Very natural indeed, although it´s not the way I´d like to play his playing is just sooo enjoyable:) . More of his kind for the sake of music!

    Marcin,

I couldn’t have said it better if I tried! “For the sake of music!” So true!

    I hear an amalgamation of:

Wes Montgomery – Joe Pass – Jimi Hendrix – James Brown (guitarist) – George Benson

    What d’ya think?

I´m pretty sure this guy was influenced by Michael Jackson and Tower of Power as well. Though, as the case with influences, he could probably talk forever about those that influenced him 🙂
