Hey all… I’m an 80s rock fan. Went to high school in the 80s. My influences would be bands such as (in no particular order)
Dokken
Ratt
Rush
Van Halen
AC/DC
Poison
Def Leppard
Hardline (yes post 80’s none the less friggen awesome!)… I know I’m missing a ton!…. Anyway, you get the idea.
Not all that fond of todays style of rock. Anyway, as my title says, ‘Late Starter’… Stairing at age 42 next April and never picked up the 6 string before. Used to play in marching band back in jr high and high school. Played a little bass guitar after high school… But now, late in life I’ve grown strong interest in picking up the 6 string and wanna learn.
If I had to choose a style that i would be able to play, it would be probably a cross between Dokken, Ratt and Def Leppard.
Dokken – Well.. you know.. George. Nuff said.
Ratt – I just love their style, always had great rythms and riffs
Def Leppard – Again… Just like RattI don’t have a guitar yet that I’m willing to play. I do have an OOOOOOLD Mosrite by Semie Mosley. Never heard of it. It was something that was handed down to me by my grandfather some 25 years ago and has been in the case every since.
So, I’m looking at guitars which can be overwhelming with all the price ranges, styles, pickups and what not. I’m looking for something in the $400 price range. Not as worried about cosmetics as I am sound. Having said that, i do want a good looking guitar, just not concerned about how nice the ivery is in the frets, or that air brushed graphic on the body… I want a strat style body.
Anyway, I guess my guitar selection woes should be in the guitars section so I guess I will just leave it at that for now. š

Hey Rick,
Welcome! Great to have more 80s influence here. š From your list I particularly enjoy Rush. Excellent band and music.
And good luck with your guitar search! Are there some decent local music shops in your area that can help you sample different guitars?
Great to have you here man and I’ll see you around the site,

SeanI’m here in the Portland Oregon area, there’s a Guitar Center here in the general vicinity. I know there are others but that’s the biggest one that I can think of. I was at a small store yesterday, didn’t really care for the selection.
Just seen Rush in concert back in June. Geddy is loosing his highs a little but still very impressive! It was an incredible show! I’ve always thought that Alex was a VERY under rated guitarist. You don’t hear much about him but, damn, that man can play.
Also, I’ve created a new thread down in Guitars area…

SeanHey Rick,
Welcome aboard here at Infinite Guitar! I’ve been a premium member for several months now, and I love it! The instructors are all excellent teachers & players, but they are also VERY accessible and extremely patient and supportive as well. You’ve come to the right place! Best of luck!
Hey Sean Conklin,
Hey bud, I never knew you were a fan of Rush! I thought you were too young to be a Rush-Head! (LOL!) Anyways, I’m a HUGE Rush fan (I’ve seen them live 9 times!) and I just realized that even though Alex Lifeson is not considered a “shredder,” he certainly is an AWESOME all-around player/musician. Check-out the live version of “La Villa Strangiato” from Exit Stage Left LP circa 1982, for Alex’s considerable chops! Then listen to Alex’s Fingerstyle Acoustic-performances on “Broon’s Bane/The Trees” from the same live album, and you’ll hear the tremendous diversity of influences and abilities in Alex Lifeson’s playing! Great stuff!
Maybe an “In the style of Alex Lifeson???” could be a great learning experience for ANY aspiring guitarist/musician (IMO!)

Absolutely! Rush is excellent. Many years ago when I was introduced to Dream Theater, I saw that many of the band member’s had Rush as a large influence. So I checked Rush out and have liked them ever since. Great stuff!
I like their earlier stuff, not as much into their POST Moving Pictures music. After moving pictures, their music while still good and full of tallent, just got a little boring to me. I think my all time favorite rush song would be The Trees. Not sure why but for some reason I just love that song.
Hey Rick!
A pleasure to have you here. I gotta admit I love 80’s music, the album which I consider to be one of the finest of all time is ‘Hysteria’ by Def Leppard. Just wanted to get that off my chest. š
I have seen Rush 15 times. I was able to see them twice on the Snakes and Arrows tour.
If it had not been for seeing Alex Lifeson play way back on the Moving Pictures tour I never would have picked up a guitar.
Glad to see that all of you guys like them also.

There is no shame in that. I agree. I’d admit to liking another artist, however, i’d be shunned if did… At least now anyway being a new guy. Maybe in time when I’m a little more known here I may fess up. [;)]
After that it’s really hard for me to pick a second. All depends on the day and my mood. I might consider Dokken’s Back for the Attack second, while the next day I may consider Rush’s Moving Pictures. But can’t foreget about RATT.
So anyway… I plan on signing up for the site so i can start some lessons, however, I need to get a guitar first. Tooo many choices, tooo many things to take into consideration. I’ve seen some VERY impressive tallent here on the board.
Welcome Rick.
You picked a great place to start! Get you a Jackson dinky dude, you wont be disappointed, for the price!
Then dive right into the lessons here….there is everything from beginner to crazy!! More like insane!!
You can literally spend years working on what is here already!
