Hey All,
My name is Aaron I’ve been playing guitar since I could walk. I still suck so I registered here to actually start taking my guitar seriously. I’ll give you my life story since I’ve got nothing better to do right now.
My Story:
Dad played in a band his whole life. They just do covers of old rock bands and play country music (its a must in his home town or they’d get no gigs). He’s inspired me to play guitar however I’m mostly self taught and have picked up some bad habits. He also plays the steel guitar and the dobro. My sister is also musical and she plays in the symphony for her home town and teaches violin lessons. She kicks my ass at music.
Recent endeavours:
Purchased a tapco unit to do some recording on my comp so I’ve been messing around with that a lot lately. Purchased a subscription here to help me learn my style of music (METALLLLL). Purchased new amp.
My Gear:
Line 6 Vetta 2 combo w/ FBV
Fender Deluxe Strat (American) – Lovely wife supports my loud habits and got me this for my bday.
Epiphone SG – Mom broke guitar in half while vaccuming room many years ago. Had some guy repair it for me and it looks new! Hard to accomplish that on a set-neck.
Bunch of pedals that are no good to me now that I have the Vetta.
Top 3 Favorite Bands:
Symphony X
Dream Theater
Silverchair (I know, a lot different than the first 2.)Am I wrong in thinking that the first 2 could do without the retarded keyboard solos? I think prog metal would be way cooler without them. Just my opinion š
My guitar knowledge:
Looking to better my rhythm as playing by yourself all your life can be bad for this. I know my pent scales pretty good and can play decent rhythm guitar (within bounds) I know nothing of Jazz music and my theory knowledge is weak. Looking to learn more of latin style guitar without having to finger pick and of course expand on my lead guitar playing for metal music.
Look forward to seeing you guys around I’ve already browsed a lot of the vids here and my playing has already improved since getting premium. Thanks in advance for letting me leech your guitar knowledge.

Well I’m going to take out Dream Theater of the top 3 and put in Manowar. Manowar got me in to metal and can never turn my back on that. š
P.S. Anyone wanting to jam in Calgary Canada hit me up!
Hey Aaron,
Welcome aboard man! Really cool to find out more about you. If you’re into metal then I’m sure you’ll find a lot of cool lessons for that here! š
How do you like that Vetta by the way? I’ve never played with one myself but I’ve heard they’re outstanding.
I agree with the DT and Symphony X keyboard solos. haha. Some of their keys solos are better than others, but I’d agree that a lot of their songs could do without them.
Great to have you hear man and I’ll see you around!
SeanHi Aaron
Thanks for the informative introduction, it’s a pleasure to have you aboard the good ship IG!

Amp is amazing. I’ve been playing off my dads old Peavy Session 500 steel guitar amp so its a huge upgrade for me. Lots of selections to get the sound of some great amps. If you get it with the FBV pedal switches you can change the whole sound/effect/amp with the step of a switch. Great amp if you can pick it up used for cheap. I paid about 800 bucks for it and the FBV. š
Hi Aaron! š
IMO, no consideration of “metal-rhythm” guitar would be complete and/or historically accurate without a thorough examination of Metallica’s “mastermind” singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist James Hetfield or Texas’ own “Cowboy From Hell,” Pantera’s “Dimebag” Darrel Abbott! š Hetfield’s precise, mostly-downstroked and often palm-muted power-chord riffs are a lesson in-and-of themselves, š and Dime’s well-rounded “Van-Hetfield” amalgamation showed how one guy could have the best-of-both worlds: That is the tight/focused metal-rhythm approach of Metallica’s Hetfield and the wild and fluid lead-chops of a Van Halen or Vai! š® š Studying these two guys (Hetfield & “Dime”) will give you a solid background in the more raw/primal side of “riff-metal,” since the abundance of your stated influences in metal are from a couple of the more “prog-metal” bands, perhaps learning a couple of tunes/rhythms/leads from (old!) Metallica & Pantera will give you a better all-around metal style & influence? Just some ideas… š
That all being said, you’ll learn plenty here in regards to traditional metal and prog-metal! I think Sean and Richard are the more “metal-guys,” so you’ll find some tutorials of theirs’ to be directly influenced by metall-riffing or metal-lead approaches. š Also, Rick has some AWESOME tutorials which feature some of the lead guitar techniques necessary to play a lot of the “prog-metal” solos. š
Enjoy the site & have fun!

LOL. Welcome to IG, Aaron! My cousin brother is named Aaron too. Beautiful name.
You’re not going to find any free time once you start on all the awesome lessons here. š I agree about getting serious to play guitar. Getting focused and setting goals really help.
All the best,
Rohan
