The modes and learning how to relay the personality of each one would be the next step IMO, but for new scales altogether, you’d probably love some exotic scales. Perhaps delve into Hungarian minor a little and try that as an occasional substitute for your natural and harmonic minor? The Hungarian takes your Harmonic minor and raises the 4th. It’s like its evil cousin.

Lots of metal uses this scale. Use some harmonics on the 6, 7
I wonder if it is hungarian minor….
My instructor has called it the “spanish flamenco” scale 10 years ago.

    5 6 9
    5 6 8
    6 7
    5 7 8
    4 5 7 8
    5 6

Go to http://www.jamcenter.com all kinds of scales you could learn there and implement. My favorite scale has got to be dorian, I am having alot of fun with the minor 6 pentatonic scale that i learned off of this site from Tom Quayle

    Hi brekehan, šŸ™‚

I believe the scale you “pseudo-tabbed-out” is a (5th) position-pattern of an “A-Phrygian Dominant Scale.” This scale is derived from modally displacing a “D-Harmonic Minor Scale” to it’s fifth-degree, (which is “A.”) šŸ˜Ž

    Thus:

    “D-Harmonic Minor” = D E F G A Bb C#

    Therefore:

    “A-Phrygian Dominant” = A Bb C# D E F G

    BTW, it’s “Phrygian” because of it’s “Flat-2nd,” and it’s “Dominant” because if you were to stack a 4-note chord from this scale’s 1st-3rd-5th-7th degrees, you’d yield: A – C# – E – G, which spells “A Dominant 7th” or just “A7.” šŸ˜‰

Incidently, Yngwie J. Malmsteen has made a living off this scale (and it’s parent scale the Harmonic Minor.” – LOL! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜‰

    I hope this helps! šŸ˜‰

And if you want to hear where Yngwie got it from take a listen to Sails of Charon by the Scorpions featuring the great Uli Jon Roth šŸ™‚

    Hi scottiescott, šŸ™‚

You are correct about Uli Jon Roth’s influence on young YJM, but let’s NOT forget that they BOTH (YJM & UJR) were influenced by the prevailing Harmonic Minor Tonalities of some of the pivotal composers/musicians of the 17th/18th-century from the Baroque-Era (IE: J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, etc.) and then later on from the Classical-Era (IE:violinist Niccolo Paganini) šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜Ž
