Hey guys
Just venting my spleen here. š”
I’ve been on a pretty intense workout plan for the past couple of months but recently felt something not right with one ankle. I decided to ignore it and train through it but I now have two sprained and very painful ankles. I’m finding it very difficult to walk without pain but I’ve been taking painkillers so it has helped to ease the pain somewhat. It’s of particular annoyance to me because I was so close to my target weight(6lbs away) but cannot exercise until I’m back to 100%. Anyhow, I guess I just need to concentrate on getting them healed so I can get back to fitness again.

It’s all Cardio Vascular work. I was doing light jogging to start the routines off but started getting pain in one ankle. It’s totally my own fault as I could feel that there was a problem with the first ankle but chose to ignore it. If I had listened to my body I would probably be training again now.

Hey Rick,
First of all, kudos to you for making the effort to live a healthier lifestyle! I need to get into a “cardio-routine” myself. š
Anyways, the reason I’m replying (besides commending your efforts) is simply to share with you what I know about our body’s diagnostic-system – A.K.A. “Pain.” You are a very intelligent person, so I’m sure you understand the role that pain plays in our bodies. It’s simple. If your injured, your brain sends/receives pain signals so that you hopefully DO NOT further injure that area. Short-term use of pain-medication can be effevctive to alleviate the annoying pain-symptoms, but remember (3) things:
1.) Pain is a diagnostic-report to “self,” and should be recognized so as to NOT further injure the area in question.
2.) Pain-medication (by masking the pain signals) allows us to continue the range-of-motion/motion that causes said pain. Thus, without really “feeling it,” we can further damage the area in question!
3.) (and this is a BIGGIE!) Pain-medication – especially prescription-type pain-meds that contain ANYTHING in the OPIATE-family (IE: Percocet/oxycodone, Vicodin/hydrocodone, or Oxycontin/oxycodone-hydrochloride) can be/are EXTREMELY addictive! Perhaps you’re just taking OTC-meds, in which case, these warnings regarding prescription-meds DO NOT apply to you! š (Especially if they’re taken for an extended period of time. Again, short-term use, AS PRESCRIBED, is usually safe, but every individual’s body/brain reacts differently!) Over-the-counter meds like Motrin/ibuprofen or Alleve/naproxin are VERY safe! The only way they can be problematic is if you take more than prescribed, as that can be damaging to the liver. š
OK Rick, hopefully you’re “on-the-mend” and this stuff is all a moot point! I only bring it up because those drugs DO NOT discriminate! That is, you can be the most intelligent, most talented, most financially-secure person in the world and still end up with problems associated with opiate-dependence/addiction! If you want to play it safe, stick to the OTC (over-the-counter) stuff and bear with the pain! Trust me, sore ankles are far more desirable than the nightmares associated with opiate-dependency! š® š
Best-of-luck with your injury, and stay patient bro! š The last thing I want to see is one of my favorite/most-inspiring musicians (and people) sidelined with a nagging injury (or worse!) I’ll say a prayer that you mend quickly! š

Hey Bill
Really appreciate your concerns regarding this man! Luckily they are points which I’m aware of and I’m taking OTC ibuprofen to help ease the pain. I used to do weight training very seriously some years back so that experience should have helped me come to an sensible decision regarding the initial pain but my impetuosity (regarding eagerness to lose weight) got the better of me. As you rightly said there is also a danger when using pain relief to forget that the injury is there and do further damage but I am not making that mistake!! It is very frustrating as I really want to train but it is my own fault and I just have to be patient.
Thanks man! š
Rick I am a personal trainer/martial arts coach(Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA) most of the things I have people do are from the following website:http://www.crossfit.com/
They are all very easy exercises that will kick you into shape in no time flat. If you are new to fitness go very, very slowly. Most of the people I see that get injured go in balls to the wall, get hurt, and never workout again.
Bout your injuries: Rest, ice,Celebrex or Ibuprofen, rinse and repeat as long as necessary.

Hey Rick,
Sorry to have seemed like such a nag! š® It’s just that I’ve lost a few friends to “the junk” and I’m very sensitive to the damage it has caused people that I care about… Anyways, I was very happy when you replied to my dissertation by saying that you’re on OTC ibuprofen! Perfect bro! As I said, that stuff is harmless (except for possible liver toxicity, but that would require much more than is directed!) I should’ve known that you would understand and subsequently eschew these dangers Rick! I’ll relax and “cheer-up” now! š®
Best of luck reaching your health & fitness goals Rick! š

I’m a fat guy who’s never done much excercise in his life, but since I’m fronting my own band now I want to look good. Got any advice to ease me in from having never done any workouts at all?
Edit: i have no money for gym membership or to buy equipment. I just have me and my guitar and amp.

First of all try to find something that you enjoy doing so it wont seem like work. I was that guy, in high school I was on the track team, then I got out of school, went to college and promptly gained about 50lb. I went from 180lb to 230lb in about 6 months. To much of the college lifestyle. LOL!!!
Finally I got sick of it, and since I had always wanted to do martial arts, I joined the colleges Judo club and fell in love with it. I lost the weight but it wasnt a hassle cause I really liked what I was doing.
Thats the thing, find what you like to do: running, biking, weights, swimming, then just take out the junkfood and beer(thats what I had to do)and the weight will go.

Sorry to hear about your injury Rick. Hope it’s a speedy recovery. Kudos to you for your weight loss training as well. 6 lbs away from your goal is really close!
This summer I’m planning on hitting the weights again. It’s been a couple years since I was training pretty hard. Once Infinite Guitar started being built my workouts took a huge hiatus. Time to get back to pumping iron! We should all start the Infinite Guitar workout club! š
Coop, that’s awesome that your into martial arts. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Might have to look into doing that someday.
