On band members not turning up!
Alright so I have a gig tomorrow night and just found out today that the Sax player wont be there. He double booked himself and the other commitment is apparently more important.
Luckily, This has not happened to me much. I’m terrible frustrated though because we were only a quartet to start with, and some of the arrangements were heavily reliant on that instrument. So now all I have is a Trio including myself and to be honest I have never been keen on running a whole set as a soloist.
There is a chance ill be able to get a pianist to fill some gaps but its tentative at the moment.
Anyone here ever been in this situation. Or a similar one?
Secondly. I would like some opinions.
I have been asked to accompany a group next week. Only he has organized no rehearsal nor has he given me the music. The tunes are not incredibly difficult and I have heard them before, so chances are If i turn up on the night and get the music then I’ll be able to wing it.
However. It is my opinion that musicians, even Jazz musicians, should show some degree of professionalism and give people charts in advance, at the least. Maybe even a rehearsal.
So having said that, I am considering turning him down on sheer principal. Should I ? Even though its not a big deal? Was his reluctance to organize a rehearsal or give me music in advance a sign of laziness? Or his subtle way of saying ” I have faith in you, just wing it ” ? I think the latter.

Hey Mike! How’d the gig go?
Most of the folks I’ve worked with have been pretty organized, but every once in a while you get those double-bookers haha. About that guy, you never know, but I bet he just thought you could wing it easily enough. Maybe just ask him. š
You’ve gotta post some recordings of your gigs bro!
I wound up getting another sax/pianist I know to fill in. He was a champ, a really fun guy to be on stage with. We had a few hicups due to having to alter the arrangements but all in all we got a good response.
I didn’t play all that well unfortunately, but no use making excuses š I guess thats the downfall of Improvised music, you never know how its going to turn out untill its too late.A mate had a little mp3 recorder with him on the nite, so I have uploaded a couple tracks at;
http://www.myspace.com/jazzmick‘Billys Bounce’ and ‘ Scrapple ‘
I dig. Really, I do. Pretty decent recording too.
Glad you found someone to fill in, that’s good. Sounds like it turned out well enough in my opinion.
I think it was in Scrapple that Tim did the old ‘1 note chorus’ which is always a giggle. It goes to show, that after all the hours of practice and experimentation. You can still fall back on one note and sound good š
Love those tunes Mike! I especially enjoyed Billy’s Bounce. You guys pulled the night off great. š
Also sounds to me like it all worked out quite well!
