As the title suggests, what bands/artists are you listening at the moment? I couldn’t see a thread on this so I thought I’d start one.
I’m currently into Marco Sfogli, Alex Argento, Adam Nitti, Greg Howe, Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane, along with Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa (saw him in Leeds a few weeks ago, amazing!), Rachmaninov and Bach.

I listened to a bit of Marco’s album on Spotify and have to say it sounded awesome! Better get my hands on it! The main majority of my listening though has got to be Dream Theater… I just can’t get enough of their stuff! There’s just an endless source of inspiration in there š
I am obsessed with rare YouTube clips of my favourite guitar players i.e- Brett Garsed, Greg Howe, TJ Helmerich, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Allen Hinds, Tom Quayle, Rick Graham, Shawn Lane etc. I totally love discovering these amazing obscure players as well…..my recent favourites are Jack Thammarat, Alex Hutchings, Damjan Pejcinoski and this Irish guy called “andyferg”…..amazing players
I just stumbled onto three instrumental guys I really like right now. Neal Nagaoka, Mario Parga, and Patrick Rondat. They all have one thing in common, really good albums. You can sit there and listen to a whole album. I also spend way to much time watching all the normal youtube phenom’s, Govan, Lane, Howe, Macalpine, the list can go on and on. š
Currently listening to After The Burial’s Rareform album. Technical metal! Really awesome. Not very big on metal these days…well new metal anyway…but these guys are writing really cool songs. Listening to lots of Guthrie Govan and Greg Howe. Oh…and Jeff Beck aswell. Bit of Miles Davis. David Sylvian’s album, Secrets of the Beehive aswell. Basically listening to a diverse range of things at the moment!!
AndyI can’t listen to much instrumental stuff in one sitting. My brain seems to need hear singing in order to really enjoy music. Good vocal harmonies really do it for me.
I remember going to see Joe Satriani supported by Paul Gilbert recently and was incredibly surprised to find that, much as I love Satch, I got bored after about 30mins and was wishing that PG would come back on and do some singing or something to break the monotony. Was grateful when Stu Hamm did his bass solo bit.
I actually prefer PG’s pop stuff to his instrumental stuff. It doesn’t have as much soul in it as Sfogli or Satch. I can’t stand Vai for more than a couple of tracks at a time either. great player, but mostly doesn’t touch me emotionally.
Hi guys,
I’m listening to Awake by Dream Theater. I still think that their first two CDs are the best. John’s guitar playing was much more progressive, melodic and adventurous as opposed to just being fast. Of course, that’s just my opinion. I still own every Dream Theater CD, lol. They are awesome.
I’m also listening to Chickenfoot. I love them. I just ordered Marco Sfoglis’ CD. I am anxious to hear that! I am also ordering John Petruccis’ solo CD. I love Glasgow Kiss.

I have to agree with you there, Mandz. As much as I respect Vais’ ability to coax wild sounds out of his guitar, he just doesn’t do it for me. There are some exceptional songs from his repertoire like Blue Powder, among others. But overall, his playing style is more grating to me than melodic. Again, that’s just my opinion.
Also, I just now ordered Erotic Cakes by the man himself, Guthrie Govan. Why hadn’t I done that sooner?…lol…

At the moment I’m listening actually onle to two albums, which are Erotic Cakes by Guthrie Govan and There’s Hope by Marco Sfogli and yesterday I listened to the Cowboys From Hell album by Pantera. In general I’m more attracted to instrumental music at the moment, but Pantera always works š
+1 on Erotic Cakes, but I’ve been really enjoying some Derek Trucks during my morning commute
I recently discovered Buckethead and found that I love just about everything he’s made. Despite having some strange songs, he’s really good, at least to me.
Adam Nitti – Liminal
Super super foot tapping stuff!
No other band like Ivanhoe, this is the perfection for me š
I am listening to Allen Hinds at the moment and think he is best kept secret in the US guitar scene. I bought 4tracks from iTunes and am totally floored by his tone and touch. His music is slightly “smooth” at times but the tone and note choices are faultless. The best way to describe his style is “Allan Holdsworth with a Blues/Rock harmonic sense”. Check him out people…
