I was thinking whats too old to be playing in a band?
I feel like i missed my calling.. I started playing guitar when i was 14, and played on and off for 12 years. I had alot of people tell me that i was good… Then i got caught up in putting straws in my nose and chasing around women, and quit playing.. then i settled down and got married… Now after 12 years off i have recently started playing again( in january), and im coming up with alot of nice sounding riffs.. I would like to be in a band, but i was thinking who would want to come watch some 40 year old playing speed metal riffs onstage… šŸ™

Just wondering whats everyones thoughts on this… And to the younger members, would you watch a band in their 40’s playing metal?

Never too late man! I plan to play metal (as well as other styles) to the grave. Sure, age can factor into the image of a band, but if quality music is there, that’s what matters. In other words, it’s all about the music, and nothing to do with age. I’d listen to a 10 year old play metal, and I’d listen to a 60 year old play metal, as long as it rocks. šŸ˜‰

Good luck finding a band bro! Be sure to get some compositions up on myspace etc. and start looking for an established band or likeminded band members.

    Agreed with Sean.

It’s never too late, or early, to start jamming with people and performing. Several of the groups I have played with consisted of musicians from early twenties up to the age of 60. I dont get around to the rock/metal gigs much but im sure its much the same. In the respect that older musicians are a bit wiser not only as people but as listeners and performers.

So for me watching a band of 20 year olds or 50 year olds makes no difference. If they can entertain me and put on a show, thats all that counts.

I sure hope when im that age that I’ll still be able to get out there and teach the young fellas a lesson šŸ™‚

    Good luck, keep us posted!

Roope Latvala for Children of Bodom is 38 and is at the forefront of metal these days. You’re not much older than him. Lamb of God is in it’s mid 30’s. Iron Maiden still rocks as hard as ever with their ’06 release “A Matter of Life and Death”.

Your mental age is more important than anything. As long as you have the energy and enthusiasm to give to it then you can play it .

A friend of mine is old enough that he’s long past raising his kids and is divorced. He got an opportunity to play out in hawaii so he sold of most of his stuff and moved out there. He’s been a sucessful gigging musician since. Been about 2 years now I think he’s been going strong.
