So I had a little meet with the Editor-In-Chief and head of the guitar department at Hal/Leonard today, who is the worlds largest music publishing company, which is located right here in Wisconsin.
I had been talking to the guitar instructor at school about him because he had suggested that I do transcribing for them since he seemed like I was doing a good enough job. I mean hell, I transcribed and arranged a song from The Lion King 2 for piano, keyboards, bass, guitar, and full choir with lead voice, along with the final score from the movie Broken Arrow, not to mention some of the jazz tunes that I am having to learn for my funk band as well as a few solo’s for some peoples.
So Steve put the word in to Jeff, who is the head of the guitar dept. at Hal/Leonard, and as luck would have it, he was here doing a presentation for the Music Business class, so I met with him, showed him some of the work, and it seemed like he was impressed so he said he would shoot me an e-mail this week about getting to his office and having a meeting with a few guys at the company about the job. he also ended with “Well, we’ll give it a shot and see what happens.”
So hopefully this goes through and I get this transcribing job. Not only would it be a big opportunity for me, it would be one for this site as well.
*crosses fingers*

All the best to you Robert!
I was actually speaking with my arranging teacher the other day about the exact same thing. More so about the kind of money involved. I dont know if this is the going rate now days but he said he used to get paid $15 a bar.
And yea, you probably wont go better than a job with Hal/Leonard.
Good luck!
Keep us posted.fingers crossed, good luck!

I had talked to my teacher about it when he had worked there and he said that he was paid about $25 a page. Which to me is alot better than working for minimum wage at a grocery store, like I did for 2 and a half years.
But $15 a bar? Jeez, that’s good.
Cool stuff man.
I’d be a good job. Not bad pay if your a quick transcriber.
But what are you going to be transcribing?

I guess whatever they give me to transcribe. Could be anything.
So, Robert, what’s up on this one?

Well, I haven’t gotten a reply from Jeff at all yet, and I talked to Steve about it and he said he’s usually slow at getting back to people. Just a week ago a guy he knew finally got an interview and audition at Hal/Leonard after almost a month and a half of waiting, so I’ll keep bugging him about it till I get my interview.
Everything has it’s time, I geuss. Hope you get your interview and get in. Sounds like a rewarding job, both musically and job/career/experience wise.
