Alright – this is driving me nuts.
For the past 12-13 months I haven’t written any music at all. Well, I have, but after listening to it 4 times I don’t like it anymore. It’s usually only like 4 beats of music and then…BANG, I don’t like it anymore.
Before all this I have written tons of stuff (literally) – e.g. one full album that I was originally planning to record, but now I want to re-write all the music, because I think some of it isn’t as good as it could be. Anyways:Does anyone have any serious, and easy-to-do, advice on this?

This is the only music I’ve written in the last year that I kinda like:
(Just a midi and guitarpro file)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/k7xks0For starters.
It’s totally natural to feel your music is ‘rubbish’ or ‘could be better’ ect… The creative spirit is restless and constantly critical. We all feel these things.
Are you possibly asking too much of yourself? I remember when I first started writing music I gave myself these massive standards to live up to. And to be honest, there was no way to ever meet them. My overall understanding of my instrument and harmony aswell as songwriting in general was inadequate.
After realizing these things I actually stopped worrying about composition, and just went back to learning tunes and studying other people’s music.
Sorry there is no ‘easy’ fix to this. Try taking a break from it. Often when your pushing yourself to be creative your just wasting time. The most creative moments in my life have been totally out of the blue.
So maybe if you let it ride for a few days and then come back to it fresh and with an open mind. You might hear something you couldn’t earlier, amidst the frustration.Feel free to post recordings of anything new your working on. Maybe a little collective brainstorming will help you discover something you hadn’t thought of.
Mike.
could you post that stuff via the attachment option in the forums. I’m a bit scared of zip files š
Sure. I just couldn’t attach a RAR-file. I’ll ZIP it š
I attached another file as well. Lex Naturae. It was a rather large project I wrote 3-4 years ago, which I now wanna re-write (and that’s basically all that’s in my head these days :P). Check out November and December for the best part of it all.
Or did you mean like a non-zip/rar file? Cause that I can’t…since there’s no midi option, I think…
I don’t think I’ve got “Circles” uploaded anywhere, but the midifiles from Lex Naturae can be heard here:

As said: November and December…
Listening to Lex Naturae.Prelude and January so far.
I cant see why you would want to start over with this stuff. It seems pretty solid as it is.
December is definately an interesting one. It feels like you were virging on a bit of seriealism in the middle.
Good points Mike.
I think that it’s vital to remember that everything you come out with creatively is equally important whether you feel it is good or not. What I mean by that is that the pieces that you deem to be not so good can lead to a piece which you feel is good, so I feel it is essential that you understand that creating ‘rubbish pieces’ is an essential aspect of creativity.Once you take this on board it may well help you to be less critical of you ideas which is a very good thing.
OK, gonna check your stuff out.Good advice both of you. Going on holiday now. I will try and think these things through while away, and then when I get home I’ll look into composing again maybe. Thanks! š
Hey, no ‘maybe’ about it. Keep writing man!
Well, I’ve been trying to write music for the past 12 months, but it just doesn’t come out as I want it.
My advice would be not to concentrate on writing music and just learn some of your favorite bands songs… see the techniques they are using and incorporate them into your own music, dont sit down to write music sit down to play and have fun… the music will come
I can agree with that.
Unfortunately for most of us in the begining. Composition is not something we can just do when ever we want. Without the relevant understanding and experience as a composer, putting your thoughts onto paper and onto the bandstand can be a struggle.
I was speaking to a freind, who is now a well respected musician and composer in melbourne, a while ago about this. His opinion was that, and ill quote, ‘ you need to know 100 great tunes before you can write 1 good one ‘
So with that, I’m not saying we should forget about composition untill these requirements are fulfilled. It does make a good point though. We need to have alot of music embedded within us before that instinct to combine musical ideas can really flourish.
Once you have tens or hundreds of other composers ideas allready in your mind. Once you think of one on your own, you will have all this other music to draw on and use as a refference. ” hey, the first bars to this melody resembes this tune… and the next 4 bars remind me of this in a way… what chord’s did they use to harmonize it? hmmm it doesn’t quite sound the way I want but were making progress. “
Also, there is the whole theoretical world to consider. Many years of study are required to even touch the surface of what is truly possible in music. Personally I would barely consider myself half way there. Then once you have learn’t all the things the professors and the Jazz cats down at the improv have to teach you.
The journy begins.
I think I’m finally overcoming it!
http://www.sendspace.com/file/7stjth – Here’s a midi-file from Guitarpro, which I’m working on.. š
Hey bro, the link seems to be down?
Hey Sean, sorry for not replying earlier. I’ve been busy with living life off the internets.
The link was probably only available for 1 week. I think I got tired of what I had uploaded and stopped working on it… same story again.
