In truth, my buddies. The drummer i usually jam with is Tony Tezak, we started jamming together back when i was about…12, we have this awesome musical connection. Also my buddy Jared Duncan, way better at guitar, and we compliment each other very well. Us 3 started around the same time and have grown so much musically its outstanding. The only instrument we havent had is a vocalist and a bassist, so for vocals i would want either Tommy Rogers(BTBAM) or Mikael Akerfeldt(Opeth), because of the beautiful cleans and evil growls. For bassist…im not too sure, id have to go with…Cliff Burton(Metallica…no brainer) because of his “lead” bass playing, it was just amazing. So thats what i would have as the most amazing band to ever grace Earth!!

    my band would be:

    Ric fierabracci: Bass
    Vinnie Colaiuta: Drums
    Steve Lukather: rhythm guitar
    Kevin Moore: Keyboard
    Mark Free: vocals
and me playing some solos hehe:)

    😮

I would have to say. (assuming we can include dead musicians)

    Niels Henning – Upright Bass
    Amadeus Mozart – Piano
Scott Tinkler – Trumpet (amazing Australian horn player)
Nate Smith – Drums (only ever heard him when I saw the Dave Holland Quintet, but by far the most creative percussionist I have heard to date)
Charlie Parker – Alto Sax -how could charlie not be there =P
Me – sitting peacefully in the corner, making sure no one leaves 🙂

    Guys,

OK, so my disclaimers are that I’m gonna break down some stylistic boundaries and combine some cats that probably wouldn’t collaborate! (Since I tend to dig lots of different stuff, why not toss it all into the “musical-stew” for an amalgamation of my favorites!) Also, since we’ve lost so many great musicians over the years, (some prematurely for various tragic reasons) I thought it only fair to have THREE Dream-Band Lineups! First, a lineup of THOSE NOT WITH US ANYMORE. Secondly, a lineup of musicians based on their TECHNICAL MERIT. Thirdly, a lineup of musicians whose STYLES I dig a lot!

OK, so here’s my “Dream-Band Lineup” of those NOT with us anymore:

    Drums – John Bonham
    Bass – Jaco Pastorius
    Rhythm Guitar – Jimi Hendrix
Lead Guitars – Shawn Lane & Django Reinhardt
    Piano – Art Tatum

Now, here’s my “Dream-Band Lineup” based on Technical Merit:

    Drums – Dennis Chambers
    Bass – John Pattitucci
    Rhythm Guitar – Eric Johnson
Lead Guitars – Allan Holdsworth & Steve Morse
    Piano – Chick Corea

Finally, my “Dream-Band Lineup” based on Style:

    Drums – Bernard Purdie
    Bass – John Paul Jones
Rhythm Guitars – Steve Lukather & Keith Richards
Lead Guitars – Jeff Beck & Michael Schenker
    Piano – Herbie Hancock

I had a tough time narrowing down my beloved guitarists, (thus the 4-axe lineups!!!)
but I had fun with this, and it required alot of thought! Peace.

    Hm…

    Drums – Tomas Lejon
    Bass – Randy Coven
    Guitar – Steve Vai
    Vocals – Jorn Lande

I’m sure Randy and Vai can fill out the missing keys.

Well it’d really depend on what style the band is, but since I’m a metalhead I’ll assume my dream band would be metal. This is WAY too hard to just pick one choice, so I’ll just throw out a few options for each.

Drums – Tomas Haake, Matt Greiner, David Husvik
Bass – John Myung, Victor Wooten (I know he isn’t into metal but he rules!)
Vocals – Ole Børud, Björn “Speed” Strid
Rhythm Guitars – James Hetfield, Me
Lead Guitars – Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, the lead guitarists of Scar Symmetry
Keyboards – Jordan Rudess (but minus some of the cheesy stuff he does haha)

Man that’s tough! I could probably add a ton more people to each instrument but I’ll leave it at that. 😀

Wow! I’d love to see that gig! What a band that’d be. I have absolutely no idea how it’d sound but I’d certainly want to hear it! Good choice!:D

    Hey Tom,

Thanks for digging my “not with us anymore/late-great” dream-band!
Yeah that did come out pretty wacky & eclectic, now that you mention it!?!
Actually now that I look back, I think my “based on style, but still alive”
dream-band is even more bizarre! I mean can you picture Keith Richards
opening a song by himself and playing a “badass open-G tuned reggae-tinged
rock riff,” followed by “Motown-influenced” rhythm section Bernard Purdie and Zep’s
underappreciated genius John Paul Jones. Herbie Hancock then re-harmonizes things
as only he can with a “Miles-approved comtemporary jazz-sensibility.” Jeff Beck adds
soaring “whammy-bar inflected fleshtones – SANS flatpick (of course!)” while Michael
Schenker & Steve Lukather add BIG rock to the mix, trading outro solos loaded with
JCM800 midrange, spewing out rapid-fire pentatonic madness punctuated by wicked
heartfelt bends and blissful heartfelt vibrato!”

OK Tom, maybe I got a bit carried away with my best rock journalist prose!

    Sorry!

    ~Bill Meehan~

    P.S. I definitely need to add one (1) member to my “late-great” dream-band lin-up:

    Tenor Sax: John Coltrane

I mean, for christsake, how long would the jams be (and how many notes would be
played – YIKES! – with Coltrane, Lane, Reinhardt, (not to mention the occasional
PASTORIUS) soloing!!! OMFG! The thought of Shawn Lane & John Coltrane trading solos
completely fries my mind! In fact, whenever I’ve tried to figure out where Shawn Lane got
his style, I struggle to name the usual short list of influences you’ll often hear associated
with the formation of a particular guitarist’s style. But Shawn “f*&%ing” Lane? You tell me!
All I could ever come up with was Holdsworth meets Hendrix meets Coltrane! Furthermore,
I FIRMLY believe that Shawn Lane was HEAVILY influenced by MANY non-guitarist
musicians (brass, reed, woodwind, keys) and even some NON-musician influences
(like authors and philosophers, as he was apparently a voracious reader!) One more
Shawn Lane tidbit, and then I promise I’LL SHUT-UP!!! I believe that Shawn’s legacy
as an instrumentalist will not be fully recognized until he’s been dead for a VERY long time
as it has only been a few short years since he passed (R.I.P. Shawn…) and he still seems
to boggle many an observer of his considerable talents on guitar (AND keys
keyboards – MONSTER!) I guess this is my chance to lobby for a “How To Play Like”
lesson featuring, you guessed it, “Shawn Lane!” Well, what do you say IG Staff! Please!!!

    Thanks,

    ~Bill Meehan~

    Rick,

    Love it!

With so many great players to choose from…I’d go (at least, for today) with this:
    Drums: Terry Bozzio (Zappa/Jeff Beck/Missing Persons/UK)
Keyboard: Bruce Hornsby (Solo/Grateful Dead/Bonnie Raitt)
Bass: Victor Wooten (Solo/Bela Fleck/Vital Tech Tones)
Vocals: Chris Robinson (of the Black Crowes), Joni Mitchell
Synths/Electronic Wizardry: Squarepusher (Solo), Bernie Worrell (Parliament)
Rhythm Guitars: Eric Johnson (Solo), Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Richard Thompson (Solo/Fairport Convention)
Lead Guitars: Jeff Beck!!!!, Brent Mason, Ry Cooder, and Audley Freed (Black Crowes)

    Maybe a one-off gig?:D
