LIked the heavy parts alot. The rest of the song just did not seem to go with the heavy parts for me. IMHO.

It sounds pretty much like Dream Theatre use to sound like! The singing part is a bit different though. I like it, but I think they could have speeded it up a little, but that’s just me =)

    Hey Coop, šŸ™‚

I gotta agree with you on that! šŸ˜‰ I especially noticed that during the transition from the guitar solo/bridge to the end choruses (very cool part….however, to me it sounds like a segue from a song off Metallica’s And Justiced For All album to a chorus part from a song off Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime album – LOL! – Petrucci’s rockin’ as usual though!) All in all, not bad…a bit disjointed, but pretty solid. šŸ˜Ž

Petrucci is a great guitarist. One of the best ever, but just something DTs songs just dont do it alot for me anymore.Maybe its all the keyboards, I dont know.

It just seems like they are all so good at what they do that they all want an equal part of the sonic atmosphere. At some point some of the guys have to take a backseat for the sake of the song, and I just dont feel like they do that most of the time.

Lots of Pro bands are like that though. They need to go listen to Moving Pictures or Permenant Waves by Rush. 3 guys, lots of interplay, but fantastic songs.

    IMHO,

What I don’t get is why Petrucci seems to have completely altered his playing to suit fashionable trends.

I mean almost every solo he does now it’s just basic, mindless shredding at light speed. When I first heard Dream Theater back in about 1995 I loved Images and Words and Awake an was so inspired I learnt everything. Every solo on those albums was so memorable and well written. Now they all sound the same. The guy is such a good writer and yet he seems to just take the obvious route now for all his songs.

Disappointing for me. They’ve lost something – or maybe I’m just older and more cynical! šŸ˜‰

Thanks Sean for posting that link.

Its a great track but a pretty boring video IMHO. I guess the audio quality is not the best too. Has Petrucci’s guitar sound changed? The riffs are much chunkier. I love it!

As with all DT and pretty much other music around, with time, I’m going to end up loving this song. Can’t wait for the album release.

No, you’re right in my opinion Tom. I think Petrucci and DT as a whole have kind of “lost the magic” since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. All the albums after Six Degrees have had a very processed sound to their songwriting in my opinion.

And yeah, Petrucci’s solos certainly have changed. I think his slower and melodic solos can still be pretty tasteful, but it does seem like a lot of the faster rock solos are straightforward and somewhat directionless shredding.

I still love DT though and I enjoy the new single, but I’d agree that they aren’t really the same magical band to me that they used to be back in the day. With each new release I do hope that some of that magic returns. I guess we’ll see how this one turns out on June 23.

    Hey Sean, šŸ™‚

Ya know what? Don’t give up, because you never know! šŸ˜‰

Seriously, I had written the band RUSH off (speaking of Coop’s & my last replies!) a LONG time ago, just figuring that they had written all the good stuff that they ever would, and it seems like most bands (especially older bands that have been together a long time) hit that “wall” at some point, if you know what I mean. I never hated entire RUSH LP’s either. I would just only like a song or two, ya know?!? However, that all changed the first time I heard their most recent LP, Snakes and Arrows! Front to back, this album is amazing. Excellent songs, diversity, production, musicianship, and interplay! I can’t believe a band that has been through so much, and had achieved so much together, still had an amazing album left in them! So Sean, there’s your example of “You just never know?!?”. šŸ˜Ž

Hey Coop, do you like Snakes & Arrows as much as I do??? Give it a chance if you haven’t yet already. I have the exact same two favorite Rush LP’s as you, (Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures – both masterpieces IMHO!) and I just love Rush’s Snakes & Arrows! šŸ˜‰

Blimey I saw Rush twice on the Snakes And Arrows tour. I have the songbook, the DVD, and the enhanced CD with the making of the record.

Can play Farcry, Workin Them Angels, Faithless, and Good News First. So in other words I like it alot

Its by far their best work since Moving Pictures.

    Hey Coop, šŸ™‚

Sounds like you and I like a lot of the same stuff!!! šŸ˜‰

Interesting that you chose to describe Snakes and Arrows as Rush’s best LP since Moving Pictures, because I’ve uttered that exact same description to people also! (Ya know, I liked Grace Under Pressure a lot too – better than Signals which had some good songs, but for some reason had a dullness to the production & mix that always bummed me out, and the keyboards were a bit “cheesy” and too loud for my tatse. Also note that after that record, Rush fired Terry Brown (Producer) and he had done ALL of their stuff up to that point, so apparently they must’ve heard something that I heard, or they had other reasons that I’m not aware of?!?) Everything after G.U.P to me was spotty and trendy at best! šŸ™ So like I said to Sean, I was pleasantly surprised by S.A.A.! I saw the Vapor Trails tour too, and that record had it’s moments, but the live show I saw on that tour (in Mansfield, MA – USA) was amazing! Great setlist, great performances, awesome energy, and Alex’s guitar sound was his best ever! (BTW, I am a 16+ year user of some high-end Hughes & Kettner gear (Access Programmable Preamp & VS-250 Stereo Tube (EL84) Power Amp! – So I might be a bit biased here! – LOL!) I think the fun they had on that tour (and the incredible show of support and adulation from their ardent fans!) inspired the writing and recording of Snakes and Arrows! At least, that’s my take on things! šŸ˜Ž

Oops! Looks like I’m hijacking this thread! I forgot about Dream Theater! (LOL!) šŸ˜®

Oh yeah, Rush is a huge influence on John Petrucci and Dream Theater in general! In fact, DT has covered many a Rush song. In fact, wasn’t DT hugely involved in the Tribute to Rush LP? I thought they were? (I could be wrong, as I never checked much of that out to be honest!) šŸ˜‰

So there…I got some Dream Theater stuff into the Dream Theater thread! Mission accomplished! I’m no longer guilty of Infinite Guitar Forum terrorism! (LOL!) :p šŸ˜‰

DT did a really cool cover of The Necromancer(talk about obscure)that seagwayed into Wont Get Fooled Again.

Also, bout Terry Brown, I think it was a mutual departure. Terry did not like some of the songs on Signals, Digital Man comes to mind, but Rush kept it anyway. So I think Terry was like””Fine, if you dont value my opinion then I am done here.”and Rush agreed.

Back to DT, I really like Images and Words, Awake, and my personal favorite is A Change of Seasons. That was a fantastic recording.

Most of the other stuff has been as my wife would say”Sounds like they are playhing at a funeral, if you ask me.” quality about it. Just to disjointed.

If you want to hear good disjointed listen the The Mars Volta. They are the kings of that.

Yep, DT and Mike Portnoy in particular were involved in a Rush tribute record. For some reason Neil was quoted as calling it a recording from: “Garage band musicians.”I feel like he was misquoted here, but Portnoy got pretty upset from what I recall.

BUt later on Mike and Neil met and got it all worked out. Mike even interviewed Neil for Modern Drummer Mag a coupole of years ago.

    Hey Coop, šŸ™‚

I would bet that Neil was quoted out-of-context! I mean, Neil is a very intelligent guy, and I’ll safely assume that he has at least a decent ear for what constitutes a good musician and what does NOT! Weren’t there other musicians (besides the two DT guys) involved in the project? (Although I can’t even picture Neil criticising another musician even if they did suck! – which Portnoy & Petrucci do NOT!)?!? I dunno, that just does NOT sound like a Neil Peart quote! I could see him being defensive of his bands’s work, but I can’t see him attacking another musician’s honest attempt at paying tribute to it?!? Weird stuff…  šŸ˜‰

    Hey Coop, šŸ™‚

That article, although cool and I do appreciate the link, did nothing to clarify what (if anything) Neil Peart said about that Tribute LP?!? Geddy alluded to stuff that said by people from Rush’s office/camp/employees and NOT directly from a band member? Certainly you can tell that rumors were swirling as Geddy alludes to that, but Neil is NOT AT ALL implicated or quoted here?!? Still NOT sure about his guilt in this???

Thanks for the link though Coop. It was nice of you, and I did learn about Geddy’s feelings about it, and I was pleased to read what Geddy had to say! šŸ˜‰
