In Examples 1-3, we have this base chord progession: Dm - Am - C - G - F ---> Dm
However, in this Example 3, we'll play the above progression then move our third chord C Major up a half step and finish the progession as closely to the original as possible. Then do the same in the opposite direction...
Remember not to over think this. Yes there is theory involved but I want you to use your ears. Ask yourself how closely you were able to anticipate the next chord I'm about to play. Also ask yourself If you heard other options. If so, try those options too! :)
This is what songwriting is all about. Listen to your favorite artists. Ask yourself why their music moves you so much. Then go write it. Don't be afraid of stepping on toes. After all, it's your laboratory to conduct your own experiments just as they did.
